This is exciting opportunity to work as a Healthcare Scientist Assistant in the Cardiac Physiology Department in the OUH Trust. The role involves supporting Cardiac Physiologists and other medical specialities to perform electrocardiograms (ECGs), Blood pressures and a multitude of other clinical diagnostic testing in the Cardiology directorate.
Cardiac Physiology Healthcare Scientist Assistant (Band 3)
An exciting opportunity is available to join the Cardiac Physiology team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We are a friendly, dynamic and welcoming multi-disciplinary team working routinely across the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, the Horton Hospital in Banbury and various community settings around the county.
The role involves hands-on clinical duties such as performing electrocardiograms (ECG’s), fitting event monitors and assisting with exercise testing. Other duties include measurement of height and weight, cannulation and urine analysis. Alongside these clinical duties this role also requires basic administration skills, good time management and organisational skills and an outstanding approach to customer care.
No previous clinical experience is necessary as full training will be given and successful applicants will be expected to work towards SCST Certificate of Electrocardiography examination and the Trust’s Care Certificate.
The management of Risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment.
Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility.
**In this role you will**:
Without immediate supervision, use appropriate electro-medical equipment (e.g. electrocardiograph, sphygmomanometer, spirometer, weighing scales, and ambulatory recording systems) in wards or departments throughout the organisation to obtain physiological data from patients (adults, children and neonates).
To perform, accurately record and report patient observations -temp, pulse, BP, following completion of relevant competencies/training.
To be able to identify when to carry out and report observations, should a patients condition alter/deteriorate
To perform additional tasks as directed i.e. cannulation and phlebotomy following completion of relevant competencies/training.
To demonstrate good communication skills when dealing with patients, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team utilising sensitivity, empathy and ability to manage conflict.
To assist with patient moving and handling using correct methods and equipment as required (as per manual handling policy) and completion of appropriate paperwork.
To demonstrate skills at time management and prioritisation of workload with support from senior cardiac physiology support worker/HSA or service lead
To undertake mandatory, statutory and local training as required by the Trust and directorate.
To be flexible/willing to assist all areas within cardiac physiology e.g. at times of sickness or increased workload.
