We have a new opportunity for a qualified junior lawyer to join our Legal and Governance team and contribute to supporting ground-breaking science at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

**What you'll be doing**:

- Draft, negotiate and provide legal advice on a wide range of agreements in compliance with our internal policies and third party obligations, including research collaboration agreements, material transfer agreements, NDAs, data sharing agreements, etc.
- Provide legal support as needed to other functional teams within our organisation (e.g. Finance, IT, Procurement).
- Lead on and work with colleagues as needed to provide appropriate frameworks to improve and standardise contractual processes and documentation, including proactively identifying and addressing opportunities for such improvements and standardisation.
- Keep abreast of legal developments and sharing relevant insights with colleagues in the Legal team.

**Essential Skills**:

- Qualified as a solicitor in the UK (or equivalent in other jurisdictions)
- Experience in drafting and negotiating contracts
- Demonstrable ability to give advice that strikes an appropriate balance between risk and benefits
- Strong communicator with effective project management and/or time management skills
- Demonstrable ability to present ideas articulately and to effectively convey legal concepts to non-lawyers
- Ability to work well with a wide range of people (from scientists and academics to finance and operational professionals)
- "Can-do" attitude focused on looking for solutions
- Positive, open-minded with a flexible approach
- Enthusiasm for our organisation's charitable mission and focus on scientific research

**About the team**:
The Legal and Governance (LeGo) teams, provide a wide range of support in many areas relating to the Institute's work. The LeGo Team is made up of three sub-teams:

- The Legal Team is responsible for drafting and negotiating all agreements related to our activities, including all of our varied research collaborations, projects and materials transfers. The team also has expertise in a host of additional areas, such as providing support on data protection.
- The Research Governance Team manages the complex ethical requirements of our research. It reviews research projects and activities to ensure compliance with the Human Tissue Act, Nagoya Protocol and other regulatory elements.
- The Corporate Governance Team supports the top layer of our decision making groups - GRL Board and its committees - as well as providing the appropriate governance standards and guidance across GRL.

- Salary in the region of £50,000 - final salary dependent on skills and experience
