We are currently looking Day Assessment Unit Midwives to join our team at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

As a qualified midwife the post holder will be required to provide the necessary supervision, care and advice to women during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, to conduct deliveries under their own responsibility and care of the new born.

To provide a high standard of midwifery care to women before, during and following childbirth in the acute care setting according to UHSussex Policies and Standards.

Work autonomously in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council’s “Midwives Rules” and Trust Guidelines.

The post holder will be required to participate in their continuing professional development and other development activities.

The post holder requires effective communication skills and an ability to provide support for the Co-ordinators to ensure effective and safe team working.

The post holder will be experienced in complex and high risk pregnancies being able to utilise their skills effectively to ensure safe and excellent care to the women/ pregnant people within our care.

- Responsible for the Day Assessment unit appointments
- utilising protocols and guidelines to support you in decision making and appropriate referrals.
- Answering telephone calls and triaging effectively over the phone to ensure women/ pregnant people are signposted to the appropriate location to support their query.
- Take full responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating Midwifery care consistent with evidence based practice for mothers/ pregnant people, babies and families.
- Discuss options and support parents in making informed choices in their plan of care such as birth plans, pain relief, infant feeding, baby care, return to work, family planning.
- Analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of such care, making necessary modifications of any midwifery care pathway and giving professional advice and support as required.
- Act as the clients advocate and empower them to promote their own health and well-being.
- Respect the need for privacy and dignity and obtain clients informed consent throughout the childbirth continuum.
- Make appropriate referrals to other practitioner’s e.g. - consultant midwives, obstetricians, physiotherapists, and paediatrician, specialist midwives when needs and risks are beyond the post holder’s scope of practice or require specialist input.
- Responsible for reviewing test results and recording the results accurately on maternity systems and informing clients and ensuring appropriate referrals / appointments are made according to the results.
- Responsible for ensuring daily/ weekly mandatory checks are completed in a timely manner on each shift and documented in the appropriate places.
