**Role responsibilities**

The Head of Design will develop and strategically lead a multi-disciplinary design team who will initially be responsible for designing and delivering a range of regional active travel infrastructure projects for Transport for Wales (TfW).
- Establish, lead and manage the multi-disciplinary Design team resource capacity within TfW by establishing and maintaining robust management systems and technical processes to enable implementation of new designs.
- Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team of Principal Engineers, Design Engineers and Technicians by developing and implementing design processes to ensure Active Travel Act Design Guidance (ATAG) design standards and other highway standards such as Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) are met to provide appropriate solutions.
- Lead a strategic review and develop the ATAG design standards and maintain project design best practice by co-ordinating with the Active Travel Regional Leads to improve the quality, cost and effectiveness of the Active Travel Infrastructure in Wales.
- Oversee design output by providing technical approval on all designs produced by the team to ensure these comply with appropriate legislation, design standards and guidance.

**Who we’re looking for**
- Chartered Member of relevant professional body e.g. Institution of Civil Engineers, (ICE), Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT)
- Degree level in Civil Engineering or associated discipline or demonstrate equivalent experience.
- Demonstrable leadership and management of a multi-disciplinary technical design team.
- Knowledge and experience of relevant legislation, including previous experience of fulfilling the Principal Designer role under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
