Jordanstown School provides a specialist education for children aged from 3 to 19 who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs with a primary need of hearing or visual impairment. It is a co-educational, non-denominational, grant-maintained

Special School, currently with 88 pupils and 55 staff. The school is supported by the

Trustees of the Ulster Society for Promoting the Education of the Deaf and the Blind.

**JOB DESCRIPTION**

**POST TITLE**:BSL Communication and Learning Support Assistant

Part-time*: 32.5 hours per week,

Permanent

**RESPONSIBLE TO**:The Principal through the class teachers

**SALARY**:NJC Points 7-17: £22,369 - £26,845 (pro rata)

*32.5 hours per week are the standard hours for a full-time classroom assistant

**JOB PURPOSE**
- To work under the direction of class teachers to provide communication support for deaf pupils in or outside the classroom, to support their access to the curriculum
- To assist with BSL acquisition for deaf pupils and their peers
- To promote the welfare and support the pastoral care of deaf pupils

**MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**

The precise duties will be determined by the Principal.

**1. EDUCATIONAL AND PASTORAL SUPPORT**

1.1 Assist teachers by supporting the school’s deaf pupils to access the curriculum through BSL where appropriate.

1.2 Assist in the development of necessary literacy, language and communication skills, to enable deaf pupils to take full advantage of the curriculum.

1.3 Provide support to enable the school’s deaf pupils to learn as effectively as possible through:

- Clarifying and explaining instructions;
- Ensuring the pupils are able to use equipment and materials provided;
- Assisting in motivating and encouraging the pupils as required;
- Assisting in areas requiring reinforcement or development;
- Promoting the independence of pupils to enhance learning;
- Helping pupils stay on task.

1.4 In liaison with teachers and other professionals, plan, prepare and deliver sessions to develop pupils’ use and understanding of British

Sign Language and Sign Supported English.

1.5 Supervise individuals or groups of deaf pupils on specified activities, including extra-curricular activities, as directed by the teacher in charge.

1.6 Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils to be supported.

1.7 Establish a supportive relationship with the pupils concerned.

1.8 Support the implementation of behaviour management programmes as directed.

1.9 Assist with the development of educational and pastoral support programmes (e.g. Personal Learning Plans), participate in the evaluation of the support, and encourage pupils’ participation in such programmes.

1.10 Be aware of school policies and procedures and of confidential issues linked to home / pupil / teacher / school work, and keep confidences appropriately.

1.11 Report to the appropriate teacher any signs or symptoms displayed which may suggest that a pupil requires expert or immediate attention.

1.12 Under the direction of the teacher and following an appropriate risk assessment, provide practical and language support for pupils engaging in off-site activities. This may include sharing responsibility for transporting pupils.

1.13 Ensure as far as possible a safe environment for pupils.

**2. GENERAL SUPPORT**

2.1 To contribute to the supervision, support and pastoral care of all pupils in the school, and to the school’s extra-curricular programme for all pupils as appropriate.

2.2 To comply fully with the school’s Child Protection and Safeguarding

Policy at all times, and to ensure that all concerns are reported immediately.

**3. ADMINISTRATION**

3.1 To provide regular feedback about the pupils to the teacher.

3.2 To assist with the development and production of specialised sign language resources in a range of formats.
