Head of Operational Risk

**Job Purpose**

Provide strategic direction and accountability for the delivery of a robust enterprise-wide operational risk management framework, supervising a team who are responsible for risk advisory, risk assurance and control assurance activities as well as engage the business in liquidity/capital management to ensure appropriate capital adequacy plans are in place.

**Core Responsibilities**
- Develop and implement an Operational Risk Management strategy, framework, and supporting policies, standards and procedures to drive, promote and maintain a strong operational risk management culture within the business
- Establish and maintain effective operational risk management, control systems, monitoring and reporting to deliver the function’s strategic plan
- Prepare and present clear and concise operational risk reports to UKIB’s Executive Committees, Board and Board sub-committees to ensure effective management of operational risks
- Provide strategic direction to UKIB’s senior management team on operational risk matters to ensure management of associated current and future risks
- Accountable for the development, implementation, testing and monitoring of UKIB’s operational risk framework and profile, including external factors, limits and early warning indicators, to ensure UKIB remains within Board-approved risk appetite
- Lead the development and implementation of stress testing and scenario analysis and understand ICAAP/ILAAP processes from an operational risk perspective to ensure effective capital adequacy plans are in place
- Oversight of the operational risk system architecture and reporting of operational risk data from the IT systems and operational risk management systems, the testing and validation of relevant models and the development of operational risk measurement methodologies
- Engage a high performing team to deliver the function’s strategic and compliance framework
- Ensure and, where appropriate, conduct audits, risk reviews and examinations and ensure that all audit actions are implemented
- Coach other leaders in how to embed risk management best practices and controls into their day-to-day processes

**Experience, Knowledge & Skills**

**Experience**:

- Extensive experience of managing operational risk in a financial services environment
- Experience leading a high performing team
- Exposure to working with Board level colleagues
- Experience of working with government would be an advantage but not essential

**Knowledge**:

- Deep knowledge and expertise of operational risk in financial services
- Knowledge of Economic Capital modelling
- Knowledge of risk registers; assurance maps; controls testing; building operational risk frameworks, ICAAP planning and execution with first line.
- Knowledge of impact/ESRG frameworks would be an advantage.

**Skills**:

- Strong analytical skills combined with the ability to communicate complex information in a simplified manner.
- People-focused leader with the ability to build collaborative teams, develop people and link performance to overall business objectives.
- The ability to manage a team with a broad range of experience and technical skills
- Possess strong presentation skills; demonstrate ability to present to committees and senior management.
- Excellent communication, listening, and writing skills.
- Strong attention to detail and well organized; ability to prioritize, multi-task and work well under pressure.
- Ability to think strategically and have vision while also focusing on the details and execution.
- Self-motivated and works well independently; capable of taking initiative without prompting.
- Strong problem-solving techniques, including the ability to identify, research and resolve unfamiliar issues and ability to clearly communicate issues to key stakeholders
