East Suffolk and North East Essex NHS Trust is seeking a substantive Specialist Grade Doctor in Clinical Microbiology who will join the Microbiology workforce who provide a service to both Trust and local communities. This role based at Colchester Hospital, and is a full time post (10 PA) with 1:4 on-call duties (1.5 PA).

Qualifications required are full GMC registration, a recognised medical degree and a minimum of 12 years post graduate training (or equivalent) six years of which must be in Microbiology

The main duty of the post is to support the existing team in delivering a safe and effective clinical microbiology service. Duties will include dealing with clinical calls, laboratory liaison, report validation and attendance at meetings such as the monthly infection control team meeting, antimicrobial stewardship meeting and weekly clinical hand over meetings. Duties may also include ITU ward rounds, patient review and attendance at MDT meetings.

The exact timetable will be dependent on the departmental requirements for delivery of the clinical service, specialist interests and the professional development needs of the applicant.

Microbiology services at ESNEFT are situated at both Ipswich and at Colchester. All routine bacteriology and serology specimens are analysed and reported upon within the main laboratory on each site. Specialist virology samples are mostly processed at the PHE laboratory based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Special bacteriology/serology is sent to the relevant Reference Centres.

The workforce is planned for 8 clinicians across the two ESNEFT sites, 4 at each. The clinical service operates independently at each site although with shared clinical and infection control guidelines. Infection control, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Clinical governance roles are distributed across clinician workplans.

**Duties of each department include**:

- Liaison with clinicians, hospital and community staff and GPs concerning the diagnosis and management of patients and prevention of infection.
- Validation of laboratory reports
- Daily ITU ward rounds
- Patient review (bacteraemia, complicated and deep-seated infections)
- Stewardship rounds (e.g. EAU and bone and joint infection)
- Attendance at MDT meetings (e.g. OPAT, DM foot

The trust has a grand round and clinical case presentation weekly on Thursday and Friday’s respectively

The post will be based predominately at Colchester hospital, and there is an expectation that the post holder will be flexible about working on either site as the need of the service arises.
On-call

The successful applicant will join on-call the rota, currently a 1:4 with prospective cover.

This may change to a 1:8 cross-site on-call as there becomes more integrated working across both sites. On-call service can be delivered remotely.
