**Job Purpose**

**Research Assitant/Associate**-Specifically, the postholder will work to develop new mathematical and statistical approaches for the analysis of data describing viral infection, contributing to the interests of the group in one of the following themes:

1. Virus evolution in individual hosts
2. Combining genomic and epidemiological data to understand viral transmission
3. Modelling virus entry and evolution

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. Plan and conduct assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the research strategy. This will involve taking a leading role working with researchers at the CVR.
2. To carry out quantitative research into virus genomics and evolution.
3. To work with other researchers at the CVR, University of Glasgow, and with external collaborators to support the project aims and aligned research.
4. To develop and enhance your research profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow, including writing and contributing to publications of international quality in high quality journals aligned with the project goals.
5. Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
6. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/ group/ meetings/ seminars/ workshops across the research Group/School/College/University and wider community.
7. Contribute to the supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
8. Keep up-to-date with relevant virology, evolutionary, and methodological literature, practical knowledge base, and recent advances in the field/discipline.
9. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
10. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
11. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

**For Appointment at Grade 7**
12. Perform the above duties with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to planning, funding, collaborating and publishing research. 13. To help develop and maintain external collaborations, nationally and internationally in line with the project goals.

**Qualifications**

**Essential**-Or
Equivalent professional qualifications in a relevant academic/research discipline, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

**For Appointment at Grade 7**

**Knowledge and Skills**
Essential
C1 Excellent data analysis and research skills.
C2 High level of mathematical ability.
C3 Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. C4 Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
C5 Ability to manage time effectively to ensure that deadlines are met and projects seen through to completion. C6 Ability to write software appropriate to research projects.
C7 Ability to work independently and as part of a team. C8 Ability to develop novel and creative solutions to scientific problems.
C9 Ability to communicate complex ideas both verbally and in writing for both expert and non-expert audiences.
C10 Demonstrated high quality research outputs.

**Experience**
Essential
E1 Experience of mathematical modelling or simulation e.g. as applied to physical or biological systems.
E2 Experience of using statistics to evaluate quantitative data.
E3 Experience of writing software for processing and analysing data.
E4 Experience in a scientific programming language e.g. Python, Mathematica, or C++.
E5 Experience in writing scientific reports, projects or publications. E6 Experience of delivering research/technical support seminars.
E7 Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems e.g. within a MacOS framework. E8 Experience of optimising the presentation and dissemination of complex results/data.

**Essential at Grade 7**
E9 Track record of publications in appropriate scientific journals. E10 Experience of leading projects involving highly complex modelling or data analysis.
E11 Experience of independent research in a relevant area.

**Desirable at Grade 6**
F1 Experience of evolutionary research e.g. in population genetics or virus evolution.
F2 Experience of working with genome sequence datasets.
F3 Experience of software development.
F4 Experience of writing software in C or C++.

**Desirable at Grade 7**
F5 Advanced experience with population genetics and evolutionary analysis.
F6 Experience of complex software development, including version control, use of software repositories, etc.

This position is available on a full-time basis and is funded until 31 March 2028.
