We have an exciting opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant to join our innovative Children's Speech and Language Therapy Team in Wigan. The role will be based around the Leigh, Atherton and Tyldesley areas of the borough and will involve both clinic and home visits. The post holder must be familiar with the local area and be able to travel independently across the Trust.

This is a permanent part time post (30 hours) to be worked across 4 days Monday to Friday between 0900-1700.

A Standard DBS will be obtained during pre-employment checks.

To carry out therapy programmes devised by Speech and Language Therapists.

The preparation and maintenance of therapy / training materials and equipment.

To provide support to Speech and Language Therapists

Main duties and responsibilities

To work in a supportive role alongside Speech and Language Therapists working with children with communication disorders, including learning disabilities in community, special schools and in children’s homes

To carry out therapy programmes devised by Speech and Language therapists either with individual children or in small groups, often working individually.

To assist the therapist in devising and implementing a range of non-verbal communication systems (such as signs or symbols).

To become proficient in using signs, symbols or other high-tech non-verbal communication systems.

To become proficient in recognising and treating a range of communication disorders whilst being supported by a Speech and Language Therapist.

To carry out school and occasionally home visits as identified by a Speech and Language Therapist.

To provide clerical support preparing, photocopying and maintaining supply of therapy materials/equipment and augmentative communication materials.

To undergo an initial period of in service training and continue to receive appropriate training.

To keep Speech and Language Therapists fully informed of a child’s progress.

To maintain accurate clinical records.

To respect the confidentiality of all information to which she/he has access.

To maintain departmental quality standards in working practices.

To submit statistical returns punctually.

To participate in performance review.

To attend staff meetings as required.

To participate in team and departmental projects as required.

To have a flexible approach in the support of the Speech and Language Therapy team.
