We have an exciting opportunity for a **Senior Software Developer **to join Wellcome Sanger Institute as a member of the Cellular Informatics Team.

**About the role**:
You will be working on a new project which involves analysis, tracking, reporting and storage of large genomic datasets. A large component of this project is to integrate with many systems across the Wellcome Sanger Institute and off-the-shelf products. Within this project, you'll collaborate with the team on the system design, solution architecture, implementation and testing for a number of microservices.

This job involves collaboration with various scientific research and operational teams across the Wellcome Sanger Institute, including the teams within Informatics and Digital Solutions. Gathering requirements directly from the laboratory groups, you will be assisted in developing an understanding of the biology involved in order to develop computational models. Analysing the data provided and collaboratively developing a solution will be a crucial part of the job. The Senior Software Developer role will provide the scope for you to develop insight and offer expert guidance to our scientists on best practice in software development.

As a group of software developers, we work in a team-oriented manner taking the best from current computing practices. We maintain frequent conversations with users, building relationships and confidence. We aren't afraid of rapid change in our tools to keep up with the evolution of the research that drives the development of our software.

**About you**:
You will bring skills in:

- collaboration: with other developers within the scrum team and research teams across the campus.
- communication: by gathering requirements from the experimental laboratory teams
- understanding: of programming in Python or another scripting language.
- testing: employ testing best practices in all areas of your code
- adaptation: understanding and adapting the underlying database models

You will enhance your skills in Python applied in various contexts across our products. An essential part of the role is to develop an understanding of each of the systems' architectures, data schema and tools. Your desire to learn and adapt in our fast-changing scientific environment is critical.

**About us**:
You will work as a member of the Cellular Informatics team that is part of a broader Pipeline Solutions unit, which includes System Designers and Developers, Data Scientists, Service Management specialists, in a DevSecOps / Agile delivery environment. A subset of the team works in a scrum approach to support the project. You will be joining the scrum team as a developer that consists of three Software Developers (including scrum masters), a bioinformatician plus the Product Owner who is laboratory based.

**Essential Technical skills**:

- Bachelor's degree or above in computer related sciences or equivalent experience
- Experience and understanding of version control using Git
- Evidence of ability to design and run complex database queries in SQL
- Experience of writing tests
- Experience with containerisation, e.g. Docker
- Experience of working within an Agile framework (e.g. Scrum or Kanban), CI/CD or DevSecOps environment
- Experience of working with a cloud platform

**Other Information**:
We operate a hybrid working pattern with 2 days in the office and the rest working from home. Software developers can fulfil the majority of their roles working from home, and we are very supportive in getting the equipment and access you will need to make the best of your career at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

You should expect questions at the interview around your ability and potential to work in this hybrid manner.

You should expect your aptitude, programming and testing skills to be tested during the interview process. Building an in-depth understanding of our information systems will enable you to best support our laboratory scientists.

**Salary range**:£47,643 to £56,000 (dependant on skills and experience)
