Here at the world-famous and internationally respected Wellcome Sanger Institute, we have an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and enthusiastic Advanced Research Assistant to join the Short Read team within the Sequencing Operations department.

**About the Role**

This is a laboratory-based role where you will be responsible for performing high-throughput Illumina library creations as well as manual laboratory techniques in a low-throughput environment. Generating DNA libraries using a variety of automation platforms (Agilent Bravo, Hamilton and Beckman Coulter BioMek liquid handling platforms), the Short Read team also carries out novel pilot projects to support emerging technologies using manual techniques.

Working as part of a team you will:

- Plan, organise and schedule your workload in line with priorities
- Recognise and flag anomalies to senior staff
- Maintain equipment to ensure it is fit for purpose and operating within set validation criteria
- Support experimental and automation troubleshooting
- Lead on smaller team projects
- Follow protocols with the ability to change reactions when necessary depending on sample type.
- Proactively contribute to process improvement
- Keep accurate records of work completed outside of automated tracking systems
- Help with the day-to-day running of the laboratory and be active and keep track of your own training records

**Essential skills**

To excel in this role, you will need:

- BSc in a biological science or equivalent experience.
- Excellent knowledge and practical experience in relevant techniques to the role (PCR, qPCR, Fluorescence-based quantifications, etc...).
- Ability to interpret scientific data.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills in managing competing priorities in a busy environment.
- A high level of interpersonal and communication skills.
- Computer literate: Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel.
- Be a champion for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

**About the Team**

The Sequencing Operations department (SeqOps) has a central role within the Institute, delivering high-quality data to our faculty and their collaborators over a range of techniques and platforms. These include but are not limited to, Sequencing using Illumina, PacBio and Oxford Nanopore technologies, Fluidigm Genotyping and BioNano Genomics optical mapping.

**Salary per annum**:£31,700 to £38,000 depending on experience
