Lipids and Adult Inherited Metabolic Disease within the Chemical Biochemistry department provides outpatient services ran by a team of medical, specialist nursing and administrative staff, within the UHBW campus trust. We provide a rapidly developing, high quality service to patients with hyperlipidaemia (cholesterol and triglyceride disorders) and other metabolic diseases with a strong genetic basis.

As a Medical Secretary, you will work closely with the Consulting team to provide effective and efficient secretarial support. You will be a direct contact for patient enquiries and will facilitate high standards of patient care by always enacting the Trust’s values.

From your previous experience, you will be self-motivated and proactive in achieving the clinical correspondence targets and other important aspects of the role, which involve typing and finalising dictated letters and other clinical correspondence for clinicians (primary and secondary care) and patients and speaking directly to patients that call the department, as well as other secretarial and administrative responsibilities.

This role is for 22.5 hours per week, and additional hours may be available in the future. This department employs a flexible approach and this job share role offers a variety of home and office working.

Communication
- To stay in close communication with clinical and non-clinical staff regarding patient care
- To act as the first point of contact for patients, relatives and carers. The post holder should be polite and empathetic to the patient’s needs at all times and be able to communicate effectively, particularly when dealing with difficult situations/conversation

Patient Care
- To show a caring and professional approach towards patients, relatives and carers.
- Acting with resilience to deal with sometimes distressed patients and relatives in a professional and empathetic manner

**Information Resources**:

- To audio type, edit and proofread clinical and general correspondence and reports using the Trust’s electronic patient record and speech recognition systems, ensuring that all correspondence is despatched within the Trust’s target turnaround times
- Use the relevant computer systems and the Patient Administration System (PAS) to accurately input and retrieve patient information, updating demographics where necessary and track the movement of patient case notes between department

**Organising and Planning**:

- Checking, sorting and filing investigation reports and passing information on to clinical team as required

**Service Development and Research**:

- Attend training courses as required to support personal development and the needs of the service
- To work closely with colleagues to develop/maintain departmental standard operating procedure
