**Job summary**:
The Radiation Hazards and Emergencies Department (RHED) leads UKHSA’s emergency response and preparedness function in case of radiation and nuclear emergencies. It also provides advice and support to external organisations and central Government on issues surrounding emergency response and countermeasures to be taken.

The Radiochemistry Group (RG) has a primary role to provide analytical measurements of environmental and biological samples to support emergency response advice, as well as providing commercial services to a broad range of customers.

The work is performed under accredited systems (ISO 17025, ISO 14001)

**Job description**:
This is an exciting opportunity to join a unique team working on national and international environmental epidemiology projects for a national public health agency. There are three posts currently being recruited to. This post within the Environmental Epidemiology Unit provides epidemiological and data management support across a number of areas.

The post will involve actively supporting and contributing to incident and outbreak management and response and epidemiological investigation through designing questionnaires and databases, contributing to the production of epidemiology reports and preparing descriptive epidemiology.

The post holder will contribute to surveillance activities through assuring data quality, undertaking complex data analyses and seeking to improve and enhance databases and systems. The post holder will also produce routine surveillance reports that include basic descriptive analyses and interpretation.

The post holder will support research through their contribution to scientific papers and projects as well as through designing study databases and sharing findings at conferences and meetings.

The post holder will also be required to undertake complex analytical tasks and use common statistical, database and mapping software and tools to support analysis such as producing tables, graphs, maps etc. and developing advanced queries.

**Location**:
UKHSA offers hybrid working for its employees - this means that whilst the role will be based in one of our UKHSA offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business need and in line with departmental policy.

Some business travel will be required to other UKHSA offices. Business travel between base location and any other UKHSA offices will be covered under the UKHSA Travel and Expenses policy. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.

**Person specification**:
Incidents/Outbreak support and epidemiological investigation
- Where appropriate, undertake specific steps of an epidemiological study under direction including to design and develop questionnaires.

Surveillance and data analysis
- Maintain and improve databases for surveillance of diseases and risk factors, test functionality of new surveillance systems, validate the quality of surveillance data including use of automated routines and through audit and produce and update Standard Operating Procedures
- Use tools such as Stata, R, ArcGIS, network analysis, SQL, etc, respond to routine and more complex data requests and produce routine surveillance reports, including basic descriptive analysis and interpretation of results
- Maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and partners

Research
- Contribute to scientific papers and projects on public health surveillance, incidents/outbreaks and environmental epidemiology

**Essential Criteria**:

- Graduate level in chemistry or a related discipline
- Previous experience of working in a laboratory using scientific equipment
- Good MS Office skills (Word, Excel etc)
- Ability to manage workload to meet deadlines
- Ability to make accurate observations and records
- Sound numeracy and data presentation skills
- Current UK driving licence (or equivalent)
- Availability to work away from base occasionally
- An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships

**Desirable Criteria**:

- Previous experience of working under a formal QA system
- Previous experience of analysing industrial or environmental samples
- Good verbal and oral communication skills
