**Insurance Officer**

**37 hours per week**

**Salary £24,496 - £28,371**

**Dorchester, combined with home-working**

**What’s in it for you**:
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Insurance Officer to join our small dedicated team in Finance and Commercial. You will have a primary focus of dealing with insurance claims from various Council departments and members of the public.

There will be opportunities to develop close working relationships with teams across the council and work within a service that takes a positive approach to personal and professional development.

As a service we have adopted a hybrid working approach, offering a combination of home and office working to meet business need. The teams centre of duty is County Hall, Dorchester with a requirement to attend County Hall a minimum of three days a week. A full training and induction plan will be available for the role and training for the insurance based systems provided.

**What you can expect to be doing**:
As part of the team you'll get the opportunity to provide support and manage a wide variety of claims many of which can be complex and highly sensitive on a day to day basis. You be assigned your own portfolio of claims which you will manage from receipt to completion. You will be required to investigate and negotiate Property, Motor and Liability claims. You will also make recoveries from blameworthy third parties where appropriate including use of county court processes. You will have a keen eye for detail to identify and prevent fraudulent or exaggerated claims against the Council.

You will be required to make timely decisions in relation to liability and proactively manage your assigned claims. You will also be expected to visit and interview claimants at their homes or other convenient locations, visit work sites and accident locations to generate location reports. You will be expected to work closely with and instruct solicitors acting for Dorset Council and represent the Council, Care Dorset, and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service at Court hearings.

You will also have responsibility for managing information held on the Insurance claims system, accurately updating and maintaining the claims database.

**About you**:
To be successful in the role, you will have a good general level of education, and be highly proficient in the use of ICT. Your experience in a law, insurance, or a customer service role coupled with your experience of working in a large organisation or local authority is essential.

A good understanding of policy, legislation and development in insurance and a detailed knowledge of claims handling processes, principles and practices is key to your success in the role. Importantly, you need to be able to remain objective and calm, to be able to defuse potentially difficult situations to create a climate within which claims can be managed effectively.

You will be adept at building and sustaining good working relationships with people at all levels both internal and external and be able to deal effectively with challenging and contentious situations. Your ability to elicit complex information from managers and service users and summarise it concisely and clearly is a key component for the role.

For more details and informal discussion regarding this role, please contact Dave Watson 01305 224613
