The role is initially funded by Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals Charity (209414) as part of the new ‘A Friend in Need’ initiative, to support the end of life care of patients at the Royal Sussex County Hospital by starting an ‘End of Life Care Volunteer’ service.

To work in partnership with the hospital Palliative Care Team to manage a dedicated team of ‘End of Life Care Volunteers’ to provide ongoing support to patients at the end of life, their families and carers at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

To work in partnership with specialist End of Life charity, the Anne Robson Trust (1178352) to attract, recruit, train, and manage this team of ‘End of Life Care Volunteers’.

To establish the ‘End of Life care Volunteer’ service, supporting patients in the hospital who are approaching the end of their lives, their families and carers.

To attract, recruit, train, induct and retain a group of ‘End of Life Care Volunteers’, with the support of the Ann Robson Trust charity and the hospital Palliative Care Team.

To co-ordinate the day-to-day ‘End of Life care Volunteer’ service in the hospital, working alongside the Palliative Care Team to identify patients who would benefit from Volunteer support.

To line manage and supervise the team of ‘End of Life care Volunteers’.

To ensure adequate cover and smooth running of the service during periods of absence.

Main

**Responsibilities**:
To establish the ‘End of Life care Volunteer’ service, supporting patients in the hospital who are approaching the end of their lives, their families and carers.

To attract, recruit, train, induct and retain a group of ‘End of Life Care Volunteers’, with the support of the Ann Robson Trust charity and the hospital Palliative Care Team.

To co-ordinate the day-to-day ‘End of Life care Volunteer’ service in the hospital, working alongside the Palliative Care Team to identify patients who would benefit from Volunteer support.

To line manage and supervise the team of ‘End of Life care Volunteers’.

To ensure adequate cover and smooth running of the service during periods of absence.

Communication

To liaise daily with the Palliative Care Team and ward staff to ensure that all patients who have been identified as dying are referred to the ‘End of Life Care Volunteer’ team if appropriate.

To establish good working relationships with clinical areas to identify and support their needs from the service.

To liaise with and build good working relationships with relevant stakeholders, including Charities, Chaplaincy and Bereavement Services, to ensure a smooth running service.

To liaise with funders Friends of Brighton and Hove Hospitals to support Public Relations and Fundraising initiatives for the ‘End of Life Care Volunteer’ project, when requested.

Attend Supportive and End of Life care Group Meetings providing relevant updates and contribute to the general improvement of End of Life Care services.

To provide regular contact and support to ‘End of Life Care Volunteers’ to encourage motivation and loyalty and ensure that their role is valued.

To provide and make record of supervision sessions with each member of the ‘End of Life Care Volunteer’ team, at least once every four shifts.

Provide emotional and pastoral support to the team of ‘End of Life Care Volunteers’ and implement a “Buddy” system whereby they support each other.
