Main Duties and Responsibilities To establish the End of Life care Volunteer service, supporting patients in the hospital who are approaching the end of their lives, their families and carers. To attract, recruit, train, induct and retain a group of End of Life Care Volunteers, with the support of the Ann Robson Trust charity and the hospital Palliative Care Team. To co-ordinate the day-to-day End of Life care Volunteer service in the hospital, working alongside the Palliative Care Team to identify patients who would benefit from Volunteer support. To line manage and supervise the team of End of Life care Volunteers.
To ensure adequate cover and smooth running of the service during periods of absence. Communication To liaise daily with the Palliative Care Team and ward staff to ensure that all patients who have been identified as dying are referred to the End of Life Care Volunteer team if appropriate. To establish good working relationships with clinical areas to identify and support their needs from the service. To liaise with and build good working relationships with relevant stakeholders, including Charities, Chaplaincy and Bereavement Services, to ensure a smooth running service.
To liaise with funders Friends of Brighton and Hove Hospitals to support Public Relations and Fundraising initiatives for the End of Life Care Volunteer project, when requested. Attend Supportive and End of Life care Group Meetings providing relevant updates and contribute to the general improvement of End of Life Care services. To provide regular contact and support to End of Life Care Volunteers to encourage motivation and loyalty and ensure that their role is valued. To provide and make record of supervision sessions with each member of the End of Life Care Volunteer team, at least once every four shifts.
Lead on the arrangement of appointments for interviews so that the individual is made aware if they have progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process. To liaise with Voluntary Services Manager to ensure that all volunteers and staff are aware of the Trusts policies and guidelines relating to volunteering and that risk assessments are undertaken by departments, relating to information governance and safeguarding. Organise and deliver End of Life Care Volunteer training, ensuring that all mandatory requirements are met and regularly updated. To work in partnership with the Anne Robson Trust, to identify additional specialist training requirements of Volunteers and coordinate the delivery of relevant training on an ongoing basis.
Provide on-going support for volunteers, monitoring placements to ensure effective employment and job satisfaction and making accurate records of this information. Ensure a healthy, safe and secure working environment, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, maintaining accurate documentation and reporting any concerns. Intervene at initial stages of conflict, grievances and complaints and manage as appropriate, reviewing Volunteer placements where problems arise, and arranging transfer, redeployment, or effective dismissal in conjunction with Line Manager, Voluntary Services and in line with the Trust Volunteer policy. Patient Care Delivery To ensure adequate cover is in place to provide support End of Life Care Volunteers during post holders annual leave, and when working offsite.
To support reporting of safeguarding or Datix concerns within volunteer activity for the Trust. Be responsible for monitoring patient, staff and volunteer feedback and satisfaction with overall service. To ensure policies and controls for the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults and Children are adhered to, that volunteers are not placed in situations which paid staff are expected to handle or asked to perform duties outside of their role description. Learning and Development Attend mandatory training updates as required.
Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process. Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales. Participate in the Trusts appraisal process to discuss how your role will help deliver the best possible care to our patients and help to deliver any changes in service. From time to time due to the needs of the service, we may ask you to flexibly undertake other duties that are consistent with your role and banding, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover.
