**Job summary**:
The Chief Planner is a Senior Civil Servant who advises Ministers and colleagues on policy and practice relating to town and country planning. She is Head of Profession for town planning across Whitehall departments. Her remit stretches across different aspects of law, regulation, policy and best practice relating to urban and spatial planning, urban design, environmental protection and enhancement, climate change and adaptation, transport and community infrastructure. Alongside providing senior leadership she also leads teams delivering advice on some of England’s most high profile and complex planning cases, policy relating to design and placemaking of the built environment and programmes to support capacity and capability in the planning sector. As well as supporting government priorities, the Chief Planner also has an external facing role with the sector.

This is a fast-paced and demanding role in the Chief Planner’s Office working to a Head of Office and with line management responsibilities for a Diary Secretary. You will be responsible for supporting the Chief Planner day-to-day, helping them to prioritise their time effectively, shape their agenda and perform their role as effectively as possible.

The Assistant Private Secretary will also take a leading role in supporting the Chief Planner in their role as Head of the Planning Profession across government, including running the secretariat function for the Planning Profession Board.

**Job description**:
You will:

- Develop knowledge of the relevant Directorates, assimilate information quickly, and build relationships with senior staff and their offices so that you can help prioritise the Chief Planner’s work and inbox.
- Develop a trusted relationship with the Chief Planner, Head of Office, Diary Secretary and the teams in the Chief Planner’s Directorate.
- Effectively manage the flow of work to the Chief Planner via their inbox and management meetings.
- Line Manage a Diary Secretary to ensure the Chief Planner is making effective use of their time, meeting the right people and has space to consider ongoing policy development.
- Support the Chief Planner in her role has Head of Profession, running the secretariat for the Planning Profession Board and being a visible point person for professional planners across government to engage with.
- Support the Head of the Chief Planners Office in their activities, including but not limited to, coordinating the Chief Planner’s input into policy development, a growing programme of work on international cooperation, and stakeholder engagement.
- Support the Chief Planner’s internal and external communications, researching for and preparing (or commissioning) presentations, attending events and organising site visits.
- Support the Head of Office with recruitment, finance and other processes to ensure effective oversight of the Directorate.
- Support the Chief Planner and Head of Office in meetings, preparing agendas, taking minutes and following up on actions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with policy teams, corporate teams and other Private Offices to help support work flow and priorities.
- Lead on correspondence and briefings for the Chief Planner.
- Horizon scan to identify and analyse emerging issues for resolution for the Chief Planners work.
