The Christie have an exciting new opportunity for an Associate Director of Integrated Research and Education to work across the Divisions of Research and Innovation and Education. The Associate Director of Integrated Research and Education Strategy is a key strategic leadership role within The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The broad objectives of the role are to deliver on a series of key Trust strategic aims from present through to 2028
The Christie are global pioneers in cancer research. As well as housing the largest early-phase cancer clinical trials unit in the UK and one of the largest in Europe, it is also the leading site nationally for recruitment to trials of radiotherapy, including proton beam and MR-linac research, has a portfolio of ~ 500 phase II and III trials and is the first UK centre to be officially accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre. The Christie is a Cancer Research UK Major Centre, part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre in Manchester and hosts the Manchester NIHR Cancer Research Facility (CRF) for oncology.
Research at the trust encompasses every stage of the patient journey from prevention and early detection, to living with and beyond cancer. Our emphasis is on developing personalised approaches to medicine that target a therapy specific to a patient’s disease.
You will need to have experience of matrix managing senior stakeholders across partnerships and working across diverse teams.
You will be pragmatic, with experience of effective influencing, planning and navigating for successful outcomes.
You will also be a good communicator with a passion for health care, research, education and training and improving patient outcomes and experience.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.
We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
The post holder will support the Directors of Research &| Innovation and Education in leading the delivery of the integrated research and education strategy, ensuring the delivery of effective assurance reporting to the Directors or Research and Innovation, and Education.
**The key areas of responsibility include**:
- Coordinate delivery of the divisional supporting strategies aligned with the Trust Strategic Plan (23-28)
- Support the delivery of the Trust’s elements of Manchester Cancer Research Centre strategy for integrated research and education in collaboration with partners from the University of Manchester and CRUK (plans formulated for minimum of 12 months)
- Coordinate and support the submission of strategic funding bids
- Support the delivery of relevant integrated research and education aspects of the Christie International programme.
- Deputise as required for the Directors of Research & Innovation and Education.
The delivery of the Trust’s Strategic Plan will require the Associate Director to lead on the engaging multiple strategic partners and the coordination of complex strategically significant business developments.
