**Reporting to**: Chief Executive in the interim but will report to Head of Corporate Policy and Services once appointed.

**Based**: One Canal Parade, Dumballs Road, Cardiff with some flexibility to work from home and remotely in accordance with our Agile Working Policy.

**Welsh Language essential**:No. The ability to speak and write fluently is desirable for this role.

**About the Department**

The Improvement and Governance Team covers a range of corporate issues as they affect local government, including issues related to governance and democracy as good governance arrangements are critical to ensuring effective decision-making and to maintain public trust in the local democratic process, supporting WLGA’s primary purpose of promoting better local government. The Improvement Team support sector-led improvement across councils in Wales. The team undertake this role through initiatives covering member development and leadership, arranging, and supporting peer reviews in conjunction with the LGA, both corporate and service specific, and through targeted council support. The overarching objective of the improvement programme for 2023-24 is ‘further developing enabling support around public engagement, participation and data and digital capabilities to ensure all councils engage and involve their citizens who have confidence in their performance’. The Improvement Team also provide advice and support around the equality’s agenda, scrutiny, risk management, public engagement and participation and organisational culture and community resilience.

To provide policy advice briefings and support, including undertaking and reviewing research across corporate issues and a range of policy areas (working with colleagues), with a specific focus on providing general policy support, including briefings to and for the Chief Executive.
