The National Centre for Human Retrovirology (NCHR) provides care to those with HTLV infection within the UK. The hub is based at St Mary’s Hospital, with spoke clinics in Birmingham, Manchester and York.

The NCHR delivers clinical care to those with infection, supports affected family members, and provides advice to healthcare professionals within and outside the Trust. The NCHR is viewed internationally as a model for delivery of multidisciplinary clinical care, with translational research performed within the unit contributing to the development of clinical guidelines nationally and internationally.

Complications of disease include myelopathy and leukaemia/lymphoma. The inflammatory component of the infection can cause a range of clinical presentations such as uveitis, alveolitis, seronegative arthritis, and bowel and bladder disturbance. A proportion of patients are asymptomatic carriers of HTLV infection under 6 or 12 month review, and the ACP would be expected to manage many of this group

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) is an experienced, registered healthcare professional with specialist skills to assess and treat patients, managing the clinical environment, in collaboration with the Multi-Disciplinary Team. The ACP will act as an autonomous practitioner with regard to clinical decisions and complex management plans, with appropriate support. In conjunction with other senior healthcare professionals in the team, they will also develop clinical guidance for all aspects of clinical practice within the speciality. In addition, the ACP will lead in developing new areas of practice, working collaboratively with the multi-professional workforce, ensuring quality standards are met and patient care (from the point of referral through to discharge) is enhanced.
