Overview

The Head of Finance is part of the senior team of departmental heads and plays a central role in the supporting the delivery of a wide range of exciting and innovative projects.

The role is a key position being responsible for the financial sustainability of the organisation.

**Job scope**

The role is a hands on one, operating across and with all the teams, whilst also being a big picture, strategic leader and partner within the senior management team and to external stakeholders. The focus is on ensuring the smooth running of the financefunction.

They are responsible for maintaining robust financial controls, efficient financial processing, accurate financial reporting, proactive cash management, insightful financial analysis, and strong management of tax liabilities. They will lead on the annualcycle of planning, budgeting and forecasting and will support the senior leadership team by monitoring and reporting progress against the museum’s business plan and providing strategic financial advice as required.

The role oversees a team of three, (two direct reports and one indirect) being a Financial accountant, a Management Accountant and an Assistant accountant. Additional resource is also used on an ad hoc basis during the annual audit period.

Job description

**Leadership**
- Lead, develop and mentor a high performing finance teamensuring that the staff structure is efficient, and that staff are appropriately recruited, trained, developed and appraised;
- Ensure a business partner approach exists across the finance team, enabling the team to understand and support key activities;
- Establish strong relationships across the 'Heads’ senior management group, to fully understand and influence the wider business activities and flow down to the team in a proactive manner;
- Provide support for the Director of Finance and Operations and the rest of the Directorate as required;
- Develop and maintain proactive and effective operational relationships with the banks, auditors, investment managers, system providers, and key suppliers;
- **Finance Business Partnering**

**Financial Reporting and Control**
- Deliver timely, accurate and meaning management information to the Board of Trustees, Senior Management team and the Finance and Operations Committee, highlighting variances to expected outcome and working with managers to deliver correcting action as appropriate;
- Manage all aspects of the budget and forecast planning, ensuring that financial plans and budgets accurately reflect strategic priorities, and that key drivers and variables are well understood and appropriately stress tested;
- Prepare regular monitoring and forecast reports as required for secured grants;
- Oversee the preparation statutory financial statements, liaising with external auditors in connection with the annual audit and ensuring audit queries are satisfactorily resolved;
- Manage the maintenance of appropriate records ensuring timely completion of statutory and tax returns including VAT, gift aid, Charity commission and Companies House filings (working with the Company Secretary);
- Oversee an effective payroll function in line with internal procedures ensuring all payroll and pension related tasks are completed monthly;
- Manage the working capital, preparing cash flow forecasts to ensure that the organisation can meet its financial obligations;
- Negotiate with key financial advisers such as bankers, investment advisers, tax advisers and auditors in the best interests of the museum;
- Review and maintenance of financial controls, systems and processes, including balance sheet reconciliations, implementing efficiency improvements and updating technology as required.

**Projects**
- Ability to provide strategic and/or finance support on ad hoc business projects;
- Utilise and reallocate work to enable the finance team to support any project work, developing their skills in the process.

**Person specification**

**Knowledge, skills, and experience**

**Essential**
- ACA qualified or equivalent (strongly preferred), or CIMA or ACCA qualified or equivalent
- Strong leadership and management experience of finance teams
- Experience in delivering robust financial controls and statutory financial reporting
- Cash flow management and reporting expertise
- Strategic financial planning and business planning experience
- Experience of managing processes relating to tax, VAT and payroll
- The ability to communicate confidently with Committee members, senior staff and non-finance staff
- Strong influencing and partnering skills, with the ability to build effective business relationships
- Demonstrates a commercial approach and is an effective negotiator
- Ability to manage stakeholder expectations, prioritise workloads and deliver to deadlines
- An excellent delegator and team motivator

**Desirable**
- Experience of capital project work
- Charity specific tax knowledge
