An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Space Weather Research Scientist, with specialist experience of geomagnetically induced (GIC) modelling, particularly in power networks.

The appointment is within the BGS Geomagnetism Team and for a three-month fixed term period. Geomagnetism (geomag.bgs.ac.uk) undertakes long-term monitoring of the Earth’s magnetic field through the operation of magnetic observatories in the UK and overseas.

We research the magnetic field changes in satellite and observatory data that result from space weather and solar activity. We use worldwide land, marine, airborne and satellite data to make global models describing how the Earth's magnetic field changes in space and time and what that reveals about physical processes within the solid Earth as well as the near-Earth environment.
- Global study of the magnetic field using satellite and observatory data, particularly variation of the external (ionospheric and magnetospheric) fields created by space weather.
- Studying the impact of space weather on ground-based technology and our environment.

**The specific tasks of the successful applicant will be to**:

- GIC research following the requirements under the Solar Tsunamis project, which is led overall by University of Otago, New Zealand, to investigate:

- Improvements of GIC models for the UK and New Zealand; and the potential impact on the UK’s and New Zealand’s energy infrastructure of extreme Space Weather events.
- Present research at the European Space Weather Week (ESWW2023).
