**Job Title**:_ **School Caretaker/Handy Person**

**Location**:Will be based at Sherborne Prep School but may occasionally be required to work across the Sherborne Group site to meet business needs **(Sherborne Prep School, Sherborne School and Sherborne International).
- **Reporting to**:_ **Assistant Bursar (Prep). This defaults to the SLT member on call during School Holiday periods when the Assistant Bursar is not in School.**
- **Hours of Work**_:_ 40 hours per week Monday to Friday. Hours of work are likely to be 08.00am to 4.30pm (less 1/2-hour unpaid break each day). Hours of work may be altered to meet changing School requirements, and some flexibility in hours will be required from time to time. The post holder will be required to provide out of hours support for emergency situations on a rota basis.

There may be the occasional requirement to work outside your normal working hours, e.g., weekends, functions, Commem. A job share will be considered for this role.

**Salary**: £22,672.00 per annum which will be paid monthly in arrears direct into your nominated bank account.

**Call out allowance of £1,544.64 per annum, plus a minimum of 2 hours at double time paid for being called out.**

**Holiday**: You will be entitled to 5 weeks’ annual paid holiday plus bank holidays. Holiday can only be booked following prior authorisation from the Assistant Bursar (Prep). The holiday year runs from 1 July to 30 June. You will be required to work on any Bank Holidays that fall during Sherborne Prep School term time for which a day off in lieu will be given.

**Summary of main duties**:
The School Caretaker/Handy Person is an integral part of the staff team and will work at Sherborne Preparatory School to carry out minor repairs, maintenance, and decoration. More major repair and maintenance items to be reported to the Assistant Bursar (Prep). You will also be required to provide porterage services and assisting with some cleaning tasks.

Liaising with key stakeholders such as Assistant Bursar, Deputy Head (Co-Curricular) and Sherborne School’s Estates team.

To Caretaker / Handy Person is required to ensure that all tasks are carried out in a safe, competent, and professional manner, observing and complying with all current health and safety regulations to ensure safety of students, staff, members of the public, and one’s self is safeguarded at all times.

Provide out of hours support to deal with emergency situations should they arise, supported by Sherborne School’s Estates team. Provide cover for pre-planned School events which take place outside of the normal working hours

**Duties to include**

**General Maintenance and repairs**
- Minor repairs as required both internal and external including (but not limited to), decorating, replacement of light bulbs and putting up shelves etc.
- Assist with general school projects and refurbishments.
- Monitoring and replenishing of salt in water softeners.
- Supporting with school security and associated duties - supplementing security procedures for school buildings and grounds, opening and closing school premises, weekly fire alarm testing.
- Carry out routine checks of all areas to identify maintenance requirements and liaise with Assistant Bursar.

**Portering**
- Moving of furniture, parcels, deliveries, and some heavy loads etc. as required (with appropriate assistance).
- General outside clearing/cleaning including doorways, windows, and fire escapes. Litter picking and responsibility for removal of items for recycling and rubbish.
- Clearing of gullies and gutters.
- Jet washing of external areas.
- Cleaning - occasional support including toilet and washroom areas, large areas within house, polishing of floors, carpet cleaning, etc.
- Setting up school hall for assemblies and plays and exams etc. Setting out tables and chairs and assist with setting up for events. Escorting of contractors and visitors.
- Ability to drive school minibuses (appropriate training will be provided).

**Compliance**
- Carrying out visual electrical equipment safety checks, portable appliance testing (training given).
- Escorting of contractors and visitors.
- Undertake the weekly fire alarm testing, emergency lighting, firefighting equipment, and fire door checks, record the results and report any defects to the Estates Department promptly.
- Carrying out tasks to reduce the risk of Legionella (i.e., flushing of water outlets etc.)
- Following Policy for upkeep/housekeeping for plant rooms.
- Support with compliance of vehicle fleet, as directed (will be required to drive).
