**About us**:
Led by Professor Sarah Tabrizi (Director) and Professor Gillian Bates (Co-Director) and opened in 2015 in a dedicated, purpose-built space, the UCL Huntington’s Disease Centre is uniquely placed world-wide to translate mechanistic insights to ‘first in human’ studies. It combines sophisticated cell-based systems with rigorously standardised preclinical target validation to prime mechanistically driven drug development initiatives. The Centre integrates clinical and laboratory work with small proof-of-concept first in human studies in patients in the Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre (LWENC) prior to initiating larger phase 2 and 3 clinical trials including novel huntingtin-lowering trials.
**About the role**:
We are seeking a Research Fellow specialising in Cognitive Neuroscience to work on an exciting Wellcome-funded project within Professor Sarah J Tabrizi’s research group. Your will support the aims of the Huntington’s Disease Young Adult Study (HD-YAS), which feeds into the wider aims of the Treat-HD project:
- Determine early systems-level pathology and impact on symptomatology in young adult HD mutation carriers to test the hypothesis that neurodevelopmental effects on brain structure occur before progressive neurodegeneration
- Integrate molecular and systems-level insights for therapeutic benefit by identifying and validating target engagement and efficacy markers for future clinical trials
You will be responsible for study recruitment, providing information to participants about the study, performing cognitive assessments in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), collecting and analysing resting state functional imaging data, maintaining records, and providing neuropsychological and fMRI expertise for publications.
This is a key post within Professor Tabrizi’s team and will allow you to gain both clinical and research experience in Huntington’s disease (HD), clinical assessments, neuroimaging research and cognitive neuroscience. The study will provide access to a unique multimodal dataset from a cohort of far-from-onset HD gene carriers and there will be the opportunity to contribute to high impact publications.
The nature of this role requires you to spend most of your time working on-site (On-site First) and you are expected to spend 80% of your working hours on campus.
The role is available immediately and funded by Wellcome for three years in the first instance.
**About you**:
You will hold Honours degree (minimum 2:1) in psychology or a related discipline, and PhD or other post-graduate qualification in psychology, fMRI, or a related discipline. Experience of neuropsychological testing of research participants and an interest in neurodegenerative disease research are essential. Experience of working in HD research and in a multi-disciplinary team are desirable, as is experience of working with HD patients.
**What we offer**:
Appointment as Research Fellow is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be as Research Assistant (salary £34,502 - £36,348 per annum) with appointment as Research Fellow being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
