An exciting opportunity has arisen for an aspiring or experienced Microbiology Service Manager (Laboratory Manager) at Chester & Wirral Microbiology Service based in Bromborough, Wirral.

The laboratory is a modern merged service with a sizeable geographic responsibility within the Cheshire and Mersey Pathology Network.

Core hours of work will be 09:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday.

To manage the laboratory on behalf of, and in conjunction with, the Lead Consultant and Divisional Manager, in an efficient, cost effective and safe manner.

To ensure the laboratory offers clinical and environmental microbiology services of good and consistent quality in accordance with the Trust, UKHSA and laboratory policies and procedures.

To ensure that the laboratory makes an effective contribution to the Trust’s Pathology Directorate.

To be a member of the Pathology Management Team for both COCH and Wirral Trusts.

To lead the laboratory staff by example and in a manner which will encourage the development of a positive attitude by each member.

To contribute to the Trusts and to the local and national strategic policy.

To ensure confidentiality and conformity to the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is situated on The Wirral peninsula which has a stunning coastline and beautiful countryside surroundings, with great activities for its residents.

We are one of the largest and busiest acute Trusts in the North West of England, comprising of the Wirral’s only Emergency Department. We provide a high quality range of acute care services and employ over 6,000 staff, who serve a population of approximately 400,000 people across Wirral, Ellesmere Port, Neston, North Wales and the wider North West footprint.

The Wirral is easily accessible with excellent transport links including motorway, train, bus or ferry and within easy reach to the major cities of Liverpool, Chester and Manchester as well as neighbouring North Wales.

Quality Management
- To be responsible for developing, organising and maintaining the Microbiology Quality Accreditation System to ISO15189 Standards and UKAS Accreditation.

Management of Staff
- To manage all BMSs, Support and Clerical staff (and other staff as appropriate) within Microbiology in accordance with Trust Policies and Procedures.
- To manage the recruitment and selection of staff in conjunction with the Head of Pathology and Divisonal Manager.
- To facilitate the induction, education, training and professional development of staff.
- To ensure the deployment, availability and welfare of staff.
- To conduct staff appraisal and individual performance reviews.

Responsible for staff disciplinary and grievance procedures together with the Divisional Manager and Human Resources.

Financial Management
- To assist the Head of Pathology and Divisional Manager in the management of the laboratory budget and in the maintenance and development of the service within the resources available.
- To be the budget holder for Microbiology.
- To pursue appropriate income generation contracts for the laboratory, in collaboration with the Head of Pathology and Divisional Manager.
- To produce workload data and financial information as required.
- To contribute in the preparation and negotiation of service level agreements with Trust partners and to participate in contract monitoring meetings.
- To liaise with existing customers to support income generation contracts.

Technical Services
- To maintain professional competence and be aware of relevant developments in microbiology and other biomedical sciences.
- To be responsible for introducing and maintaining methodologies in accordance with Trust policy.
- To be responsible for maintaining a high standard of work.
- To ensure the provision of an efficient, effective and timely service ensuring maximum productivity within allocated resources.
- To manage the out of hours technical service of the laboratory.
- To maintain and develop the internal and external quality assurance programmes and to ensure compliance with relevant accreditation schemes.
- To develop the service of the laboratory in accordance with the strategy agreed by the head of Pathology and Divisional Manager.
- To validate and authorise reports as required.

Management of Support Services
- To be responsible for the acquisition, control and utilisation of stock and consumables.
- To be responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and use of equipment and to maintain an inventory/asset register.
- To oversee laboratory maintenance, engineering, and structural services.
- To manage the building and associated maintenance contracts, eg: estates,
