Assistant Research Scientist

**Job Purpose**
**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
For appointment at Grade 6 and 7:
- To contribute to primary research objectives, supporting research projects to deliver optimal outcomes 2. To advise and support NERC eligible collaborators to obtain world-class stable isotope data across a range of mass spectrometer platforms; execution will involve interaction with SUERC technical staff, in a highly collaborative research environment.
- To maintain and lead development of vacuum extraction systems and associated mass spectrometers.
- To lead 1-2-1 training of Facility and SUERC/University PhD students to ensure they receive intensive training in the principles and practice of stable isotopes applied to their Approved Projects. with NEIF and SUERC technical support.
- You will have or develop a good working knowledge of standard operating procedures and associated COSHH relating to reagents associated with most of these systems.
- To document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
- To devote a minimum of 10% of your time developing personal research expertise complementing NEIF Science, establishing and maintaining your research reputation and that of The University and SUERC, including enhancing your publication record, obtaining research funding and making impact.
- To perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the NEIF-SUERC group and SUERC, including Budgets/Expenditure. This includes collating annual data from SIL-HT for the NEIF Benefits Realisation Plan, and annual Cost Allocation.
- To present of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
- To engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
- To undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of SILAB.
- To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.
For appointment at Grade 7:
12. In collaboration with NEIF and SUERC technical staff, oversee the maintenance and operation of the following stable isotope vacuum extraction systems in the SIL at SUERC: laser fluorination O isotope system; conventional and laser S systems; conventional carbonate systems; H isotope extraction system; GasBench automated water and dissolved organic carbon analyses.
13. In collaboration with NEIF and SUERC technical staff, oversee maintenance and operation of associated mass spectrometers: SIRA II (x2), VG Optima (x3); Thermofisher MAT 253 (x1) and Delta V (x1).
14. Be responsible for the management of technical aspects of NEIF research projects, including where relevant, management of the laboratory, technical resources, and technical staff. This includes advising PIs and their PhD students on sample requirements for NEIF systems, the tracking of samples from arrival to measurement and eventual disposal/return to client.
15. Be responsible for the effective and timely running of, including week-to-week work schedules for the execution of, NEIF projects on these systems in association with technical staff and line manager.
17. Be responsible for the recurrent supply budget (~£10k) for the stable isotope systems, ensuring minimum downtimes, and maximum output.
18. Work collaboratively with others, including external contacts, to enhance the delivery of the research aims and support the broader strategic aims of SUERC and the University.
**Knowledge/qualifications**
**Essential**:
A1 SCQF Level 10 [Honours degree] in Geoscience or Chemistry, or equivalent professional experience
A2 Good knowledge of standard lab safety procedures.
**For appointment at Grade 7**
A3 Postgraduate qualification [Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 11, Master's Degree or equivalent professional experience]
A4 A demonstrated track record in Geochemistry, particularly as applied to a breadth of Earth System and Natural Resources themes.
A5 A record of peer-reviewed publication.
**Desirable**:
B1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in Earth Science and/or Geoscience or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)
B2 Relevant experience in development of standard operating procedures for chemical processes.
B3 Basic knowledge of appropriate guidelines applicable to the discipline.
