We are seeking a talented, multimedia-savvy commissioning editor for Africa and Asia with a good understanding of LGBTQ-related issues, strong editing skills and a keen understanding of how text can work with social media and video.
In this role, you will be responsible for sourcing, commissioning and editing news and features based on the LGBTQ+ issues facing people in both Africa and Asia. London is our preferred location for this role, but other locations might also be considered.
Since Openly was launched more than four years ago, it has become the world’s leading source of impartial and balanced global news and features on LGBTQ+ matters. Building on our continued success, we are extending the team to focus more on Africa and Asia.
This is a unique opportunity for a journalist who wishes to work for an international news organisation with extraordinary reach, and who wants to achieve real impact through fair, accurate and impartial reporting.
**The job is for a fixed-term and will end on February 28, 2025.**
**About the Role**
**As Openly Commissioning Editor (Africa and Asia), you will**:
- Commission stories and develop feature ideas for articles, infographics, audio and video content on LGBTQ+ issues in Africa and Asia
- Coordinate with and oversee freelance writers for top-notch features and video/social content
- Develop, commission and edit content from Africa and Asia that is relevant and interesting to readers/viewers around the world
- Research, brainstorm and copy edit freelance features
- Collaborate across editorial files (climate, tech and society and inclusive economies) to produce unique, cross-sectional journalism
- Build a roster of talented freelance contributors across Asia and Africa
- Maintain an editorial calendar
- Use audience data in editorial decision-making
- Ensure use of SEO and digital best practices in all output
- Work with the social media team to commission posts, video and graphics for social platforms
**To be our Openly Commissioning Editor (Africa and Asia), you will likely have**:
- Have 5+ years’ experience in commissioning journalists across a range of formats
- Strong track record of editing text stories - both news and features
- An incredible contact book of freelance journalists in Africa and Asia
- A sound understanding of global LGBTQ+ news and current affairs
- A good grasp of how to tell stories with data
- A good understanding of social media platforms, audience building and analytics
- Fluency in at least 1 other language
- Basic familiarity with video and/or audio production
- Strong command of written and spoken English
