Job summary
To support the Cardiac Physiologists and other Assistant Technical Officers in the Cardiology department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital as well as our newly established Community diagnostic hub based at Eltham Community hospital. Your will have the opportunity to rotate through both sites.
Provide an efficient and accurate ECG service to inpatients and outpatients and assist in other forms of electrocardiographic examinations including the ambulatory monitoring service. Assist with physiologist managed tests such as physiologist led exercise tests and chest pain exercise tests, if required.
Main duties of the job
To be an integral part of and to assist with the every day running of the Cardiorespiratory department.
To be comfortable dealing with patients of all types and communicate with them effectively.
Perform high quality and accurate testing including the fitting of ambulatory monitors, downloading and cleaning both cardiac and blood pressure monitors on outpatients and inpatients. Full training will be given.
To assist the physiologists, ensuring that all supporting administration in completed clearly and kept up to date.
Restocking and tidying of clinical rooms to the required standard
Understand the operation of the equipment you use, reporting any faults promptly.
Any other duties as required by the service.
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is a community focused provider of local and acute care, providing high quality services to over one million people living across the London boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley. With a turnover of around £700 million, we provide services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, University Hospital Lewisham and a range of community settings in Lewisham. We also provide some services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.
As an organisation, we’ve made significant improvements for patients and staff in the last two and-a-half years. This is reflected in our most recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection (from February 2020), which found improvements across the organisation and gave us an improved rating of “Good” in the Well-Led and Effective domains, in addition to the rating of “Good” that we had already achieved in the Caring domain. Our staff culture change programme has been key to the Trust’s improvement journey, as we’ve stabilised our workforce by reducing vacancy rates and improving staff retention. We’ve also significantly increased the representation of minority ethnic leaders across our clinical and corporate teams.
- To perform routine and emergency ECG’s on adult, paediatric and SCBU patients, both in
and outpatients.
2. To explain the process and procedures to all patients and to liaise with interpreting services,
carers and family etc.
3. To assist patients in preparation for cardiac investigations, for example support when
transferring or assistance with dressing and undressing.
4. To attend ward environments as required
5. To rotate as per a rota into Community based services for Cardiology
6. To carry out routine cleaning of all routine pieces of equipment.
7. To assist senior technician in performing TOE’s by monitoring ECG and blood pressure
and instituting emergency procedures as required.
8. To monitor stock levels and report stock requirements.
9. To have a basic understanding, when trained, which constitute a normal/abnormal ECG
and ensure that abnormal ECGs are brought to the attention of the Senior Clinical staff.
10. To identify an unwell patient even in the presence of a normal ECG and to follow the
appropriate protocols to summon help.
