Location: Stratford, London (High flex - we’d expect you to be in the office 1 to 2 days a week)

Contract: Permanent / Fixed Term / Contract; 1 or 2 days per week (0.2 - 0.4 FTE)

At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer.

We are professionals with purpose, beating cancer every day. But we need to go much further and much faster. That’s why we we’re looking for someone talented, someone innovative and ambitious, someone like you.

About the team

Cancer Research Horizons (CRH) is Cancer Research UK's innovation engine. We take scientific breakthroughs from the lab bench to the bedside, translating them into effective treatments and diagnostics for cancer patients.

With exclusive rights to over £350 million of world-class cancer research we’re a unique and powerful partner in the fight to beat cancer. We work closely with academia, industry, and investors to bridge the gap between research and the market, delivering maximum impact for patients.

The CRH Ventures team brings together the brightest minds, boldest ideas, and best investment partners to build and secure investment for early-stage propositions and enable companies to fast-track scientific breakthroughs into patient benefit. We have an established track record with spinouts having played a role in the formation of over 65 companies. Our portfolio companies have gone on to raise more than £3bn in follow on funding, with many achieving successful exit events.

About the role

As part of our plan to strengthen and enlarge the CRH Ventures team, we are seeking to appoint a part-time Investor in Residence to help expand and enhance our venture activity and support our vision to be a world-leading and inspiring enabler of innovative new oncology company formation and financing.

This is a new role. It will be dynamic, highly varied, and offers the opportunity for a seasoned and accomplished life-science investor and entrepreneur to join a venture team that has big ambitions for the future and a solid platform to realise them. The role offers a tremendous opportunity for someone with direct experience of managing life science investment funds and/or can demonstrate an extensive track record of raising capital for, building, and investing in life science spinouts in a venture partner or equivalent capacity.

Working directly with senior members of CRH Ventures, you will bring your experience, insights, domain expertise and networks to bear in spearheading the delivery of an ambitious strategic vision for the development and operation of CRH Ventures. You will play a leading role in ensuring that CRH Ventures is fully enabled to support founder scientists right at the start of their entrepreneurial endeavour, helping them to form teams, develop their early-stage ideas, and secure the resources needed to help the business achieve its goals.

What will you be doing?
- Represent Cancer Research Horizons New Ventures such that our brand and reputation as a leading investor in innovative new oncology companies is enhanced
- Support the acquisition, management of, and engagement with entrepreneurial and investment networks to accelerate development of our investee companies
- Facilitate connections between high value members of our networks and our portfolio of high-quality investment opportunities
- Deliver expert coaching/mentorship to both the CRH Venture team and academic founders on core topics, bringing forward specialist support to bolster our in-house expertise through personal networks where required
- Work with senior members of CRH Ventures to oversee management of the seed investment portfolio, ensuring progress against programmatic and financial benchmarks
- Contribute expertise as a member of the CRH Seed Fund investment committee

What skills are we looking for?
- Extensive experience of the life science start-up environment - managing funds, investing in ventures, working in fast-growth businesses
- Expertise in start-up methodologies, finance options and how the sector works (inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit and the innovation possibilities of early-stage businesses)
- Evidence of exceptional commercial skills and existing networks necessary to effectively build the capacity of founding teams and support the development and growth of early-stage ventures
- Strong process management skills and attention to detail in promoting excellence and quality
- Experience of working collaboratively within both small teams and across wider organisations
- Demonstrated capacity to influence internal and external stakeholders to achieve targets
- Willing to engage in ‘out of hours’ meetings and events with prospective or existing inves
