The aim of this role is to build on the current practice of achieving healthy birth outcomes for babies who are born Wrightington Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS FT (WWL) and those who live within the Wigan and Leigh Borough. The key objective of this role is the enablement of the full implementation and maintenance of the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle current standards (SBLCB V3), working alongside the SBL team, to deliver Element 5 as a Pre-Term Birth Lead.

The post holder, along with the lead obstetrician, will lead and facilitate a programme aimed at equipping midwives and obstetricians to increase their knowledge and competence in assessing fetal well-being, potential and actual fetal compromise in all clinical settings and improve clinical decision making and escalation.
- Together with the Intrapartum Safety Midwife, Practice Development Midwife and the Lead Obstetrician provide assurance to Maternity senior leadership team regarding compliance with SBLCB and escalating any challenges in achieving compliance.
- Ensure the delivery of and provide support with current training packages and educational resources in partnership with the Fetal Surveillance Midwife, Practice Development Midwife, Governance Midwife, Obstetricians, HEIs and local training and education boards/networks to develop creative ways of learning by building on what works well currently and innovatively utilise opportunities and different methods/ways to improve learning.
- Working with the Consultant, Labour Ward Lead Consultant and labour ward manager, Team Leaders, Midwives and Obstetricians to continue to provide comprehensive training and competency assessment to give assurance of the skills and knowledge of all staff responsible for fetal assessment and wellbeing.
- Ensure all elements of CNST Safety Action 6 are met in line with SBLCB V3 recommendations working closely with the head of governance in demonstrating compliance
- Act as a clinical role model for effective clinical leadership enabling and facilitating others to take forward initiatives to achieve the implementation of the SBLCB.

No On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

**Responsibilities**:

- Lead and facilitate a programme to enable the delivery of the SBLCB which encompasses all six elements of the care bundle.
- To facilitate the communication of highly sensitive and complex information to women and their families clearly explaining the benefits and risks of different care approaches and the alternatives available recognising barriers to acceptance, by providing training and support for MDT clinical staff
- Ensure the service has a structured process for escalation accordingly when concerns arise, or risks develop which is audited regularly and appropriately and findings shared at Clinical Governance meetings/audit meetings.
- Ensure that the woman’s voice is clear within the service developments, seeking opinion and views on any changes.
- Work collaboratively with other professional groups to maximise development opportunities and inter-professional learning opportunities.
- Represent the Trust at related special interest groups within the Local Maternity System and ensure implementation of resulting and agreed practice development initiatives in partnership with the Practice Development Midwife, Fetal Surveillance midwife and the Lead Obstetrician.
