**Hours**: 37.5 per week, Monday to Sunday, combination of day shifts and nights

Experience in Haematology or Oncology essential, teenage and young adult (TYA) nursing desirable. Training and support will be given.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

Clinical

1. To assess patients appropriately, seeking intervention from other members of the multidisciplinary team as necessary.

2. Assessment of the needs of the patient and family, ensuring provision of client centred care which focuses on the promotion of health as well as illness.

3. Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards.
4. Maintain safe practice according to Hospital Policies and Standards.

5. Ensure all prescribed drugs and treatments are given in accordance with Hospital Policy.

6. Maintain a clean and safe environment for immuno-compromised patients.

7. Ensure that blood products are administered correctly and in accordance with Hospital Procedure and Policy.

8. Administer chemotherapy and bolus chemotherapy via established central lines and peripheral cannula in line with hospital policy.

**9. Liaise with external multidisciplinary teams (eg**: district nurses, Macmillan nursed, hospice staff)

10. Provide a supportive service to patients and carers/families from diagnosis through all stages of the disease.

11. Monitor results and bring to the notice of appropriate medical staff if abnormal to minimise risk to patient

12. Arrange patients follow up appointment or admission dates for next course of treatments in ambulatory care

13. Work closely with MDT and specialist nurses to facilitate seamless transition for patients from inpatient to outpatient status (and vice versa)

14. Establish and maintain close collaboration with consultant, medical staff to facilitate the best possible patient care.

**Managerial**:
1. To line manage members of the team and maintain personal files

2. Manage and monitor the performance of the team in the work place

3. Actively participate in the management of staff absence and attendance, completing all necessary documentation

4. When appropriate, take charge of the department in the absence of the Senior Sister, ensuring that standard of care and department management are maintained

5. To rotate through Ambulatory Care Unit (AC) and Withington ward area ensuring that standards of care are maintained.

6. Ensure skill mix is appropriate to clinical needs of the department. Maintain and update the off duty using the e-rostering system

7. Liaise with Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse, to ensure adequate staffing levels on each area of the department

8. Keep Senior Nurse Managers/Modern Matrons aware of pertinent issues in the clinical area.

9. Help foster a supportive working environment and maintenance of staff morale, promoting a culture where staff feel valued and are able to reach their potential.

10. Act as preceptor/mentor to Withington ward staff and Pre and Post registered Nurse.

11. Work with unit manger to ensure clinical standards of care are achieved and participate in audit of clinical care.

12. Be aware of responsibilities with regard to Health and Safety at Work Act. Maintain and develop an environment and culture that improves health, safety and security.

13. Supporting the manager in initiating and implementing change, and in promoting an awareness of professional accountability.

14. Supporting the manager when appropriate, in the recruitment and selection of new staff to the clinical area.

15. Actively participate in Clinical Risk Assessments and ensure correct documentation of Clinical Incidents in accordance with Hospital Policy.

16. Lead a team of registered nurses and health care assistants.

17. Developing and updating protocols and patient information
