Youth Worker

Axcis Education are pleased to be working with alternative provision in Skelmersdale who are searching for a member of staff to join their team on a full time, long term basis. This site caters for secondary aged pupils with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour. The role would suit someone coming from a youth worker background due to the needs of the pupils you would be working with. The successful applicant would work Monday to Friday 8.30 - 3.30 with a 30 minute lunch break. There is potential for a permanent position for the right applicant. The role involves working as a teaching assistant, supporting pupils in the classroom on either a 1-1 basis or in small groups. You would be expected to assist the class teacher where required.
The school is a smaller than average provision that has about 50 pupils on roll. These pupils can no longer remain in mainstream education, and the aim is to help them to reengage with their education and to potentially return to mainstream schooling if possible. The pupils have social, emotional and mental health needs, whether that is a difficult home life, trauma, addiction or other forms of SEMH. There are also instances of challenging behaviour within the school. Other SEND needs such as autism, ADHD, GDD and ODD may also be present. The school was rated as ''good'' by OFSTED in its most recent inspection with particular note given to the senior leadership team and the strong support staff in place.
In order to be considered for this role, you must have previous experience working with the SEMH needs mentioned above, whether that is in an education setting or another setting, such as residential support. Prior training in restraint or behaviour de-escalation would be looked upon favourably. The most important thing is thing is that you are a reliable and resilient individual who would not be intimidated by instances of challenging behaviour. You must be able to form positive, trusting relationships with pupils and challenge disaffection. The school are willing to consider those with limited school based experience provided they have the right SEND knowledge and are the right fit for the school.
