**The Role and Department**

The Department of Archaeology at Durham has a world-class teaching and research reputation. We are regularly ranked as one of the top two Archaeology departments in the UK and one of the top six globally. We run fieldwork projects across the world and our staff are passionate about sharing their expertise with students. We run six undergraduate programmes and six taught postgraduate programmes and have an academic community of some 400 staff and students combined. Our research and engagement, as well as our teaching, stretches from excavation and heritage protection work in Nepal and Sri Lanka, to our field training excavations at Auckland Castle, Co. Durham and we use our cutting-edge laboratories and expertise to take forward research and teaching on internationally significant projects and collections. We also work closely with staff in two Durham University museums, the Oriental Museum and the Museum of Archaeology. We collaborate closely with museums and heritage sites across the North East region, Britain and increasingly engage with international partners as well. We host a commercial archaeology unit in the Department and a range of lab-based commercial operations centred on our applied and scientific research expertise.

**The Role**

Heritage science is defined as an interdisciplinary research domain spanning the humanities and sciences focused on enhancing the understanding, care, use and management of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage so it can enrich people’s lives, both today and in the future. Our work at Durham is interdisciplinary and applied, encompassing conservation, materials analysis, bioarchaeology, geosciences, chemistry, physics, computer science, remote sensing, visualisation, machine learning, historic engineering and material and visual culture studies. However, we anticipate the post-holder will work broadly across the archaeological social and science remit, creating connections and synergies that strengthen and support large-scale grant development and submission.
- Scope out and make new research connections within Durham University and with regional HEIs and non-academic stakeholder organisations to advance connections in the field of Heritage Science and heritage/ material and visual culture more broadly;
- Identify cross
- and inter-disciplinary research opportunities in the fields of Heritage Science, heritage and material and visual culture, linked to global challenges and UN Sustainable Development Goals;
- To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder
- Organise, deliver, mediate and minute stakeholder meetings and discussion groups to advance collaborations and project development with DU and external stakeholders;
- Work with DU support departments, Senior Research Administrators, Research and Innovation Services and the Development and Alumni Relations Office to identify funding opportunities relevant to Heritage Science that align to DU staff expertise;
- To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder. Work with the department’s Community Archaeology post-holder to create synergies and realise grant potential from regional heritage involvement;
- Gather and collate relevant data and metrics
