**Job description**:
We are looking for a motivated, driven individual to act as a policy advisor on the South East and East Team within the Regional Partnerships and Delivery Division of DfT’s Regions and Cities Directorate. This role is part of a friendly and high-profile team (currently one G7 and three SEOs) working across a broad range of policies in relation to the South East and East areas.

This role provides a unique opportunity to ensure that the South East and East of England continue to drive the UK economy through an effective and efficient public transport system.

The team works collaboratively with DfT road, rail and other policy colleagues to ensure the department is maximising the growth opportunities from transport investment, and across Whitehall to shape government place-making policy: We work particularly closely with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

The South East and East team lead on the relationships with the three Sub-national Transport Bodies for the region, England’s Economic Heartland, Transport East and Transport for the South East, and a large number of Local Transport Authorities.

The role is an excellent opportunity to work collaboratively with policy colleagues and local partners. There may also be opportunity to contribute to the work of other place-based teams in the Regional Partnerships and Delivery Division given common priorities and objectives.

**_ Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: _**
- Develop effective working relationships with colleagues within the department (policy, analytical, communications, legal and Private Office) and across Whitehall, in Sub-national Transport Bodies and Local Transport Authorities to secure joint working to deliver the Government’s transport and agenda. This is a vital element of our joint working, as how we develop and communicate policies and guidance both internally and with key external stakeholders will determine their success.
- Supporting business to provide policy advice, including but not limited to, Ministerial briefings, Parliamentary business, freedom of information requests and correspondence.
- Gathering and analysing information, including engaging with frontline experts, and bringing it together for oral and written briefing for Ministers or senior managers on key South East and East transport matters such as major infrastructure projects and land disposals, as well as other policy matters that arise.

For more information about the role and responsibilities please see the attached Role Profile.

**Person specification**:
**About you**

To thrive in this role, you will be a motivated individual with excellent written and verbal communication and inter-personal skills to engage confidently with senior and other colleagues, including providing challenge where necessary. You develop strong relationships with colleagues and partners, building good networks to ensure effective information-sharing and support delivery of the best outcomes.

You are quick to understand technical detail, and you understand the broader strategic context to a piece of work and develop policy that takes account of this bigger picture. You are a strategic thinker with the ability to link issues and policy areas together to maximise opportunities to add value and to consider how things could be improved.

**Additional information**

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

The role is likely to involve some travel to Local Transport Authorities and Sub-national Transport Bodies within the UK, and you will need to be flexible to attend meetings or visits. This would be at least monthly, or more frequently as required.

**Behaviours**:
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:
