We are looking for someone with a wet chemistry background to join the Cosmogenic Nuclide Laboratory in the Geography department who will be responsible for the preparation of rock samples for accelerator mass spectrometry. The role holder will also spend a small amount of time assisting lab user within the Institute of Geography.

**The Opportunity**:
The School of GeoSciences is looking for a passionate chemist to join its Technical Services team to work in its Cosmogenic Nuclide Laboratory. This lab plays an important role for investigating Earth surface processes such as exposure ages and erosion rates. In this role you will undertake wet chemistry procedures to extract and purify 10 Be, 26 Al and 36 Cl for accelerated mass spectrometry (AMS) analysis. Your main role will involve preparing samples for academic research and will be expected to interact with academics and PhD students from within the School and also external collaborative research partners. The lab also takes on commercial work and you will be expected to interact with the AMS facility at SUERC. You will primarily be responsible for undertaking laboratory work for existing projects where you will work alone at times, and alongside other qualified staff during any hazardous procedures.

In addition to preparing samples for cosmogenic nuclide analysis, you will also spend a small proportion of time assisting with the other labs within the Institute of Geography. You will be there to support a wide variety of users, who could be undertaking volcanic ash (tephra) analysis, quaternary macrofossils (beetles, diatoms and pollen), soil/peat properties, water quality, microscopy and other general laboratory activities.

**Your skills and attributes for success**:

- HNC/HND or equivalent level qualifications in Chemistry plus previous experience of relevant technical/scientific work
- In-depth experience working in a wet chemistry lab
- Strong understanding of the importance of H&S in the workplace
- Initiative and judgement to resolve day-to-day problems with equipment and procedures.
- Strong communication skills required to ensure lab users are aware of planned workflow and any obstacles encountered
