**Job summary**:
This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest microbiology departments in England as an AA grade Autoclave and Stores Medical Laboratory Assistant. The Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) is a collaboration between UKHSA and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

The microbiology partnership provides comprehensive routine services and specialist services to a wide range of hospitals across the North West and beyond and also assists in any UKHSA co-ordinated responses or activity of a national/international nature, e.g. Bioterrorism incident or major disease e.g enteric outbreaks, COVID19, SARS.

The department employs around 130 staff and has a workload of approximately 1.2 million specimens covering major clinical specialties including respiratory medicine, transplantation, burns, renal medicine, urology & paediatrics. The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical bacteriology service combining traditional methodologies with laboratory automation.

The scope of this role is to assist in delivering an efficient microbiology laboratory service by monitoring and maintaining departmental stores and safe disposal of waste material. The job holder will be required to work within a rotational shift pattern, which may include shifts throughout a 24 hours a day/7days per week period, to meet the service needs of the department.

No formal qualifications are required, although a good standard of education (to GCSE level or equivalent) is necessary. You should be methodical and organised; with good communication skills and the ability to work effectively. Full training will be provided.

**Job description**:
**Responsibilities section**:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

- Wash-up/sterilisation: use of equipment including autoclaves and ovens, collection and disposal of discard material/wash-up and preparation of glassware etc
- Autoclaving of waste material and patient samples (involves moderate lifting).
- Disposal of tissue and patient samples in accordance with relevant guidelines.
- Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels, receipt of deliveries and preparation of orders.
- Responsible for monitoring and maintain appropriate stock levels of pre-poured culture plates and preparation of weekly media orders for external media suppliers.
- Work in a safe manner in accordance with Laboratory Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Dealing with visitors and other departmental deliveries.
- Cleaning and disinfection of equipment and laboratory areas.
- Monitoring and routine maintenance of equipment
