Trials Officer

Edinburgh, United Kingdom Scottish Government Full time

Overview:
Are you someone who enjoys working in different environments whether outdoors in field trials or in glasshouse and laboratory situations?

Do you have a keen interest in working with plants and data collection?

If so, working within SASA and the role of Trials Officer may be of interest to you.

Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA) is a division of the Scottish Government based in a laboratory, glasshouse and experimental farm on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

SASA scientists and their supporters work to ensure the quality, safety and security of our food supply in Scotland, and contribute to the quality of our environment.

SASA holds a substantial seed collection of modern varieties as well as wild species, landrace populations, genetic lines, mutants and traditional varieties that are no longer in commerce. By holding these collections SASA plays an important role in Plant Genetic Resources in Scotland and the UK. The Scottish Landrace Protection Scheme (SLPS) is also administered at SASA by the Variety Testing team. This provides a safety net for growers of landrace varieties in Scotland to deposit and preserve safety duplicate seed samples under deep freeze conditions.

The Variety Testing team, within Agricultural Science Delivery, comprises of 12 permanent members of staff whose work covers Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) trials on a range of vegetable and agricultural crops. These trials are necessary for new varieties to gain entry onto the UK National List and/or for the award of Plant Breeders’ Rights. For agricultural crops an additional agronomic test called Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) is also undertaken.

The majority of the work revolves round the collection of data on agricultural and vegetable plants, primarily based in outdoor field trials. This data is used to assess differences between new and current varieties and to determine if a new variety can be accepted for marketing.

You will have the opportunity to enhance any previous Information Technology skills particularly with populating and interrogating ACCESS databases and EXCEL spreadsheets in addition to undertaking specific training relating to Plant Variety Protection.

You should be adaptable to deal with seasonal peaks in workload and be flexible to cope with the vagaries of the weather.

**Responsibilities**:

- Providing support in Variety Testing by assisting with trial preparation including sowing, raising and maintaining plant material for field grown trials.
- Data collection - assist with the accurate measurement, description and recording of varietal characteristics on both growing and harvested plant material.
- Assisting with seed collection management by registering seed samples and preparing them for inclusion in the UK Vegetable Seed Reference Collection as well as dispatching out-going seed samples.
- Information Management - Ensuring Crop Variety Databases are up to date by regularly maintaining accurate information on stock and status.
- Regular monitoring and accurately recording results of CE Rooms and various pieces of laboratory and field equipment as part of the QA system.
- When required assist with cross-branch work during peak seasonal workloads.
