Taunton, United Kingdom Somerset County Council Full time

**Why should I choose Somerset Council?**
Working in Somerset provides the opportunity to get involved in some of the UK’s most **high-profile growth initiatives**, including new garden communities, housing infrastructure fund, enterprise zones, and national infrastructure projects such as Hinkley Point C as well embracing active and low carbon ways to travel.

This provides the opportunity to take on a wide range of challenging and rewarding work - giving you valuable experience that can be difficult to find elsewhere.

Our team has a **positive and supportive culture**, and an environment that enables people to develop and improve - which means that you’ll have everything you need to grow (or even begin) your career in planning.

There is also an option for flexible working with hybrid office and home-based working (we can also offer compressed hours).

So, if you’re looking for a place where your work truly matters - where YOU truly matter - we might be just right for you.

**What will I be doing?**
We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset - and you’ll be a key part of that. Acting on behalf of the Highway Authority, you will **provide advice on travel plans** to the planning authorities, as well as developers, councillors and other interested parties.

Our team come from a range of different backgrounds, and it is not essential for you to have had experience in the areas below - the **skills and experience required can often be developed once you are in the role**.

The work is varied, but the day-to-day activities will often involve:

- Supporting and advising managers on undertaking travel planning activity on behalf of developers. Ensuring that the statutory requirements of the County Council as the Highway Authority are met.
- Ensuring appropriate systems are in place to provide effective monitoring and enforcement of travel plan requirements.
- Upholding and promoting the aims of the council’s equality, diversity and inclusion policies; health, safety and wellbeing of self and others; and Organisational values in everything you do. Equality and Diversity practice covers both interaction with staff, service users and communities and includes challenging discrimination and promoting equality of opportunity for all.

**What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?**
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. Experience in this role is not essential - you’ll be given support you need to build your career and thrive here.

But it will really help if you are:

- **Educated to a degree level or have relevant professional development experience.**:

- Able to assess the implications of a proposal and communicate them clearly and unambiguously in writing and verbally to a range of audiences.
- Able to work with people to develop appropriate solutions.

We’re proud to be here for the people of Somerset. And that means everyone in Somerset. An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

**What will I be offered in return?**
We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do to improve the lives of people in Somerset.

We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management. As well as this, we have some fantastic employee benefits available:
