The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a national Research Centre, funded by the UK government through UK Research and Innovation, dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology. We are currently looking for a laboratory assistant who will be assisting with the day-to-day technical functions and operations in the Structural Biology Theme, providing technical assistance throughout a busy suite of research laboratories, thereby ensuring smooth and efficient operation throughout the lab areas.

As laboratory assistant you will be helping with the general run of the lab. Ideally, you will have a scientific background and have an appreciation of the different types of hazards that exists in wet labs such as biological and chemical that can exist within the laboratory setting. This varied role involves helping in the day-to-day activities in the laboratory, including working with hazardous chemicals, preparing media, buffers, dealing with all types of laboratory waste. The post holder will be also looking after cleanliness of labware and lab equipment. You will also be helping in monitoring stock levels in the lab and reporting to the lab manager if levels drop low, helping in inventory regular update, and other tasks as they come up in the lab.

- Performing routine phage test
- Keeping the laboratory clean and tidy
- Looking after our -80s and keeping them in good order
- Other laboratory and administrative tasks as required

Your daily routine will vary but you are expected to be adaptable to different types and levels of duties as the lab requires, helping the general run of the lab, and making sure equipment are well looked after and the lab cleanliness is in a good order.

The post holder will be required to provide flexible technical support as part of a technical team supporting research activities conducted within the Department of structural biology. While also helping other departments in requirements that are central in the building like the autoclave service, phage control and biological waste management.
- Selection criteria
- Essential:
- Familiarity with Word and Excel would be an advantage.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow process accurately.
- Understanding of safety and hygiene rules
- understanding waste management and dealing with hazardous waste.
- Energy, ambition and commitment to ensure the job gets done
- Flexibility to changes in priorities and adaptability to new tasks and ideas and to varied duties and tasks
- Experience of managing time in order to meet deadlines.
- Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail
- Desirable:
- Biology degree and previous experience in biology labs.
- Experience of working within a laboratory environment with an understanding of the operation of general laboratory equipment., though full training will be provided.
- Working within a biology lab.
- Experience of working in a team.
- Experience in autoclave usage and use of autoclaves.
- Ability to solve problems and resolve issues and plan solutions.
