**Job summary**:
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is responsible for promoting British trade across the world. DBT secures UK and global prosperity by supporting businesses to grow and financing international trade and investment. We have offices in the UK and an overseas network across the world.

You will join a growing and vibrant analytical community bringing together analysts across social research, economics, operational research and statistics.

Analytical teams underpin the department’s activities, providing critical research to shape its strategic development. The Central Analysis Team is led by one of DBT’s joint Heads of Profession for Social Research and includes a mix of social researchers, economists, statisticians and operational researchers. We sit at the heart of DBT and work with various stakeholders across the department and beyond to identify evidence gaps and develop products and processes to address them.

The Team has a vacancy for a **Head of Central Research.**

The role is a new one covering three strands of work.

Second you will work with the new G7 Head of Strategic and Cross Cutting Social Research on a new suite of social research on strategic issues of long-term interest. This will involve deploying innovative techniques and methodologies, showcasing the value of social research and leveraging its reach through impactful communications by leading on individual projects within the portfolio. Third you will work with the G7 Head of Central Evaluation to take forward selected work strands to implement the DBT Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy. This will involve working with a wide range of stakeholders across the Department to embed evaluation capability and support new M&E governance processes in the Department.

**Job description**:
**Research and evaluation support and advice**: deliver an advisory and capability building service providing focused and supportive guidance, assurance and challenge during the development of new evaluation and external research, internal research, evaluation and analysis, answering ad-hoc research queries. Contribute to building social research and evaluation literacy in the wider analyst and policy community.

**Strategic research delivery**:delivering strategic research projects and building long-term partnerships to grow capability in the research ecosystem to meet the analytic needs of DBT.

**Organising and contributing to prioritising central research programme**: Working closely with the Director of Analysis’ Office, finance and commercial teams to ensure the annual research programme is delivered effectively using contract management skills, reflecting our priorities including alignment to DBT’s ODP, ARIs and evidence gaps and reporting regularly to senior leaders.

**Line management**: The post holder will manage two staff.

**Hybrid working**

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

For this role, the Department will not consider sponsoring a visa or issuing a Certificate of Sponsorship. Please note we are unable to offer advice on any Visa and Immigration cases.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

**Essential Criteria**
- You must be a member of the Government Social Research profession or willing to sit a test to become a badged member.
- Previous experience of designing and managing either internal or externally commissioned research projects, working with stakeholders to meet their needs.

These include seeing the wider evidence landscape across the departmental research portfolio, spotting critical evidence gaps to fill and ensuring research is prioritised to meet Departmental needs.
