**Primary Location** UK-ENG-London

**Job** Economics

**Organisation** 532000 - MONETARY ANALYSIS

**Job Posting** 21-Jul-2023, 4:00:31 AM

The Bank of England is the UK's central bank. Our mission is to deliver monetary and financial stability for the British people.

The Bank of England is a diverse organisation. Each of its 4,000 plus people are committed to public service and dedicated to promoting the good of the people of the United Kingdom by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

**Directorate Overview**

Monetary Analysis (MA) provides the core analytic support that underpins the setting of Bank Rate each month by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to meet the inflation target. We are closely linked to the MPC Unit, which supports the external members of the MPC.

The Monetary Policy Outlook Division (MPOD) supports the MPC by helping it reach its decisions on the right policy needed to meet the 2% inflation target. It does this by developing models that shed light on how different parts of the economy behave and interact (Modelling Team), producing a forecast for the UK economy (Forecast Team), and providing policy advice (Strategy Team). It underpins this with research in the areas of monetary economics, forecasting and macroeconomic modelling.

The division comprises a Leadership Team - a Head of Division, Senior Managers and Advisors - and around 25 research and policy economists. It also maintains a network of academic consultants working on similar topics. The division has a strong focus on research drawing on insights from the literature, empirical and structural modelling to inform its policy work.

This is an exciting and stimulating role at the heart of policy-making We have regular contact with policy makers, both in set-piece presentations and on a one-to-one basis. Doing it well means delivering high-quality research and policy advice, both your own and by supporting peers and more junior colleagues. Do you want to shape the research agenda of the Monetary Policy Outlook Division?
- **Own Research** (30-50%) - you will get dedicated time to progress your own research. We expect you to maintain a high-quality pipeline of research that is publishable in top academic journals. We will support you attending high-profile conferences and maintaining and establishing links with academic researchers.
- **Leading analytical and policy work **(20-30%) - Examples of recent projects includes work on the monetary transmission mechanism and the interaction between monetary policy and financial stability. You will lead these projects, setting direction and supervising the work of other colleagues. You will take these projects from conception to delivery - which is likely to include presenting the findings to the MPC.
- **Research leadership and management** (20-30%) - You will be MPOD Research Manager, leading all aspects of our research output and ensuring insights are having an impact. This does not involve line management responsibility for researchers but you would be expected to support other researchers in the division. You will play a key role in recruiting researchers.

We expect you to participate fully in the leadership team of the Division and in the Bank’s research community. You will support the Head of Division, providing strategic direction for the division’s research and play a leading role in the implementation of our diversity and inclusion strategy.

**Role Requirements**

**Minimum Criteria**
- A PhD in economics, plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience of conducting research in academia, central banks, or other research or policy institutions
- A record of academic quality research published in good academic journals
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly in synthesising and explaining complex ideas to a non-technical audience
- An understanding of current issues in UK monetary policy
- Ability to collaborate with and coach others

**Desirable Criteria**
- Experience of working with and influencing policy-makers
- Experience of leading and delivering projects
- Links to academics working in relevant fields

**Our commitment to diversity and inclusion**

We value all forms of diversity, including but not limited to age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religion and sexual orientation.
