CONSULTANT IN NEONATAL MEDICINE

Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) is a regional centre for prenatal and feto-maternal medicine and the OUH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the regional medical and surgical referral centre for complex neonatal care in the Thames Valley Neonatal Network (31000 births). The NICU also provides all newborn care services for the local population (8500 deliveries). The unit currently has 50 cots (16 ICU/12HDU/22SCBU).

The successful applicant will join a team of 11 existing consultants.

The postholder’s duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe Hospital but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.

Clinical

The post includes attending duties covering neonatal intensive /high dependency/ low dependency care, outpatient follow-up. The postholder will also provide clinical support to the Regional Newborn Transport Service (SONeT) and Neonatal Network (Thames Valley & Wessex Neonatal ODN). Consultants participate in a non-resident emergency nighttime on-call service for the neonatal unit with a second on call system for transport - with a combined-on call frequency of approximately 1 in 4 including prospective cover.

The Children’s Hospital serves Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group where we primarily work alongside District General Hospitals for a secondary and tertiary referral base. A broader tertiary catchment area exists for the provision of more specialised and/or advanced care.

The Children’s Clinical Directorate provides general healthcare, both hospital and community based for the children of Oxfordshire. The Directorate also provide a wide range of specialty services (tertiary care) for children from throughout the Thames Valley and beyond. Services for those from further afield are provided for some specialties such as cleft lip and palate surgery and craniofacial surgery.

Emergency services are provided at both the JR and HGH. The John Radcliffe has a dedicated Children’s Emergency Department as well as the Children’s Hospital which provides a range of tertiary specialties. The Horton Hospital has a range of out-patient services, and an Acute Paediatric ward which has recently expanded to accommodate Children’s Day case surgery. The Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital manages our outpatients for Orthopaedic, Rheumatology and Chronic Pain services.

Neonatal Consultant Job plan - New appointment

The neonatal unit has identical weeks for clinical service for all consultants.

The job plan below has 8.5 Clinical Pas and 1.5 SPA. Each time tabled activity is a discrete block, and a new consultant appointment would need to do 5 of each to make up to 8.5 DCC.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
