Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Do you enjoy working in a team to provide effective intervention for children and young people with Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN).
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a vibrant team as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to provide assessment and therapy to the children of Gateshead. This role carries specific responsibility for supporting children with fluency disorders as well as a wider SLCN caseload.
- To provide a specialist service (including assessment, diagnosis and implementation of specialist SLT treatment programmes) for children and young people presenting with Fluency Disorders.
- To provide a specialist service to children and young people presenting with the full range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCNs) including those with complex and/or severe difficulties within community clinic.
- To act as a specialist resource within the Community Paediatric SLT Team providing clinical supervision, guidance, shadowing opportunities and mentorship regarding fluency disorders and caseload management within the community clinic service.
- To liaise with and advise parents, Local Education Authority and Nursery staff and other Agencies/Professionals involved with children on the Fluency and Community Clinic caseloads.
- To regularly plan, supervise and monitor the work of Speech and Language Therapy Assistants and students.
- To participate in research and audit in specialist area as required
- To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in order to provide an integrated approach to each child’s specific communication difficulties.
- To analyse and evaluate personal clinical performance in a reflective manner to ensure continued personal and professional development and the maintenance of an up to date knowledge base.
- To provide appropriate clinical supervision and in-service training for speech and language therapy colleagues, assistants and students.
Gateshead CSLT Service is part of the Community Business Unit for Gateshead NHS Foundation Trust. We are a small, innovative team who strive to provide an excellent service to the children and young people of Gateshead, whilst supporting engagement with the service and being responsive to the changing needs of the population. The Community CSLT Team work alongside the Special Needs CSLT Team to provide assessment and therapy across the disciplines of Speech and Language Therapy.

- To work as a specialist practitioner within a multi-disciplinary team of an integrated workforce that is based in the community to meet the health needs of children in Gateshead
- Act as a clinical resource for members of the extended multidisciplinary team in their area of expertise.
- To act as a resource ensuring trained staff maintain their agreed levels of competency within their scope of practice.
- To provide excellence in clinical care and working to achieve the highest level of patient safety.
- To continuously develop the service and constantly strive to improve.
- To contribute towards service evaluation and demonstration of efficacy and efficiency.
