The General Surgery Department is a busy unit, dealing with high levels of demand. In 2016/2017 there were 7532 elective General Surgery admissions, of which 948 were inpatients and 6584 were daycase. In addition a further 2,164 patients were treated non-electively. A total of 24,516 outpatient attendances were recorded for the department. The department runs a 24/7 elective and emergency service. Daily Out-Patient clinics and theatre sessions run throughout the week at Tameside Acute Trust.

The Department of Surgery has offices for Consultants and non-career grade doctors with computer facilities with Internet access. A dedicated seminar room equipped with full audio-visual equipment including slide projector, large screen TV and video recorder; the room is used for regular departmental meetings and sponsored talks. There are CT scanning and excellent ultrasound facilities on site, in addition to on site Magnetic Resonance Imaging facilities.

The post holder will be clinically and educationally responsible to the Consultant team.

The post holder will predominately work on the ward to provide support to the Consultants and middle grades work to sustain the provision of an efficient General Surgery service to patients, including ensuring, in conjunction with colleagues, the highest quality of care is provided to each individual patient who attends the speciality and support the General Surgery Department in meeting and delivering its local and national targets.

- To undertake to perform routine and on-call duties as set in the weekly rota and monthly timetable. To provide inpatient care for the patients admitted under the General Surgery department as well as providing ward based cover for outliers. The doctor will also be expected to perform on call duties on a 1:8 rota.
- To also undertake occasional emergencies arising underunforeseen circumstancesat the request of the appropriate Consultant or senior and junior medical colleagues. It has been agreed, in accordance with the Secretary of State and the Department of Health that additional duties arising under this sub section will not persist for prolonged periods or be on a regular basis.
- Attendance is required, within the first month following appointment, at specific mandatory training sessions. The training programme is arranged at the Post Graduate Medical Centre, and details of times of sessions are circulated regularly to all departments involved.
- The post holder will be expected to participate in elective and emergency theatre sessions as well as attend outpatieint clinics, as required and allocated on Medirota.
