The Sterile Services Department decontaminates and sterilises all clinical and medical devices which can be reprocessed.
The functions of the department are undertaken with adherence to the Consumer Protection Act, UK Medical Device Regulations (2002), Health and Safety at Work Act, the Quality Management System (EN ISO 13485) / the relevant Hospital Technical Memorandum’s and compliance with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures.

Various hours to be worked between 07.00am - 02.00am

Supervision of designated sections of the Sterile Service department and its staff.

Ensure Quality Records are completed accurately and legibly and that uncontrolled changes are not made to documents or records

Participate in the full range of duties in relation to cleaning, inspecting and assembling and sterilization of all instrumentation/ equipment.

Ensure compliance of associated service risks across the Trust, with particular reference to health and safety legislation.

Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures within the service and Trust.

Demonstrate an approachable and helpful style of service delivery.

Maintain good communications when dealing with clinical staff and all other service users.

Accurately records any communications required.

Answer the telephone according to departmental policy and take messages as required

Actively participate in the training of all Assistants and communicate progress to Team Leaders

Participate fully in the departments Quality Management System.

Participate fully in the departments Training Scheme.

Undertake identified learning and development opportunities as identified by line manager.

Acquire a multi-disciplined understanding of all aspects of the department’s activities.

Participate in the Trusts’ annual appraisal scheme.

Participate in the Trusts sickness policy

Health, Safety and Security

Move and handle equipment and medical devices using agreed moving and handling procedures.

Correctly disassemble instrumentation as per procedures

Correctly clean instruments and equipment as per procedures ensuring all visible debris has been removed

Correctly reassemble instrumentation as per procedures

Correctly pack instrumentation as per specific procedures

Correctly dispose of clinical waste.

Maintain hand hygiene as per Trust Policy.

Wear all Personal Protective Equipment provided in all areas of the department.

Maintain the tidiness and cleanliness in the department.

Report all accidents, incidents and near misses as per Trust Policy

Maintain a safe working environment

Carry out hospital fire policy and procedure

Assist the Team Leaders in training of Technicians to carry out duties with attention to Health and Safety

Service Improvement

Assist in the updating of theatre checklists to reflect current status

Be proactive in advising line managers of suggested improvements within the department.

Take an active part in Team meetings and audits as required

Assist Management in any review of standards and performance

Additional information

BTH is part of the Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Collaborative, therefore all roles will be required to support system wide working across the Lancashire & South Cumbria regions.
