Ward Clerk, Young Adult Cancer Unit

We are looking for a reliable and organised individual who has excellent communication skills to work as part of an admin team on Ward 27. Ward 27 is a Children's and Young Adult's Cancer unit with an inpatient ward and also an attached day care unit. The successful applicant will mainly be based on the inpatient ward as a Ward Clerk but will also be required at times to provide admin cover for the attached day care unit.
To work as part of the Ward 27 admin team you must be highly motivated and a good team worker. You must also be able to demonstrate an adaptable, enthusiastic approach to your work, and the ability to manage your workload with various competing demands for your time and attention within a busy clinical area.
The post is suitable for an individual wishing to work as part of the Multidisciplinary Team, communicating with patients, families and clinical staff in the ward environment. You must be able to be courteous, respectful and helpful at all times.
The successful post holder will provide and maintain an efficient and effective administration service to the ward team. Therefore, previous administration experience and computer skills would be desirable.
A working knowledge of Track It, Nerve Centre and Patient Centre would be beneficial, however comprehensive training will be provided for all successful applicants.
The hours are Monday - Friday 09:00- 5.00pm.
- To be responsible for collection and delivery of post
- To answer telephone calls and queries
- To make follow-up appointments for patients
- To coordinate clinics
- To assist in the general running and maintenance of the ward as a member of the multi-disciplinary team
- To communicate clearly with nursing staff and wider team
- To take urgent specimens to the appropriate laboratory
- To photocopy notes for transfer to other hospitals
- To ensure all stationery and information booklets are ordered when needed
- To keep patient centre system up to date, including admission transfers and discharges of patients.
- To maintain the ward diary
- To be responsible for inpatient / outpatient notes ensuring they are available and ready for use when needed
- To file reports, care plans etc. in patient notes
- To maintain a clean and tidy patient reception area
- To greet patients/parents & carers when they arrive on the unit and ensuring they are in the correct place

This role is to primarily support the Deputy Ward Manager, Ward Manager and ward staff, allowing them to support the service delivery in a clinical capacity.
1. To be responsible for collection and delivery of post
2. Answer telephone calls and queries from clients, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team, forwarding enquiries to appropriate staff
3. To ensure smooth running of the department by
- Keeping list of patients admitted / discharged
- Making follow-up appointments for patients
- Ensure evening admissions / discharges are entered on the patient centre system
- Where reports are signed and notes have left the ward area, ensure reports are forwarded to appropriate area
- Liaise directly with secretaries re: reports and notes as necessary
1. To assist in the general running and maintenance of the ward as a member of the multi-disciplinary team
2. To take urgent specimens to the appropriate laboratory
3. To bleep members of staff as required
4. Photocopy notes for transfer to other hospitals
5. To be aware of emergency procedures
