To be an active member of the team within the Functional Automation section of the Special Chemistry department working with Biomedical scientists, medical staff, Associate Practitioners and the Supervision and training of Biomedical assistants (BMA) in a flexible manner to support the function of the process. Also the tasks undertaken by a Supervisor involve a higher level of complexity and a requirement for more knowledge, understanding and for using initiative to prioritise the work. This role is 24/7 and can include weekends and night working.

A vacancy has arisen for the position of Functional Automation Supervisor in the Specialist Chemistry department within the Blood Sciences Laboratory, University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust. Although there will be a requirement to work at any of the UHL sites as appropriate for the delivery of the service, any time over a 24/7 period, the primary site will be the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

This is not a Biomedical Scientist training post and therefore not a ideal position for trainee biomedical scientists.

Providing support for the smooth running of the laboratory, your duties will include:
Supervision and Training of all BMA staff and other staff introduced into the Specimen Reception department.

Receipt of Pathology samples prior to analysis which involves manual handling.

Numbering, processing and booking in a range of different samples that come into the Specimen Reception department in Functional Automation.

Dealing with all referral samples and processes and supporting others in the department to achieve the objectives of the referral processes.

Inputting of data from patient request forms onto the system.

The post will also involve a number of general administration and housekeeping duties.

There is also an element of manual dexterity required in this role

Training other team members in all duties of Specimen Reception
Some basic laboratory duties and wash up duties and referrals

Appraisals of BMA staff

You will be required to work on 24/7 contract including weekends and nights.

- Supervisory & Training: Participate in the training of new biomedical assistants and associate practitioners. Supervise biomedical assistants and less experienced staff, allocating work, training, etc
- Order entry: Book-in laboratory requests into the laboratory computer ensuring the appropriate laboratory tests and examinations are performed on the correct patient’s specimens and the resultant report is sent to the correct requesting source.
- To maintain a clean, safe environment, ensuring adherence to the Trust’s standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control.
