Research Associate in Phage-bacteria Interactions

Manchester, United Kingdom The University of Manchester Full time

Phage therapy, the use of viruses that only infect bacterial cells and kill them, is a promising potential solution to the antimicrobial resistance crisis that is threatening modern medicine. Phage therapy has been used since before the clinical use of antibiotics, but with variable success in part due to limited knowledge of phage biology. Renewed interest in phages over the last decade has hugely advanced understanding of phage-bacteria interactions, but phage lysis - the critical process that kills bacterial cells - remains poorly understood in clinically-relevant settings, limiting therapeutic progress.

This interdisciplinary project combines microbiology and biophysics to advance mechanistic understanding of the functional diversity in phage lysis systems and the impact of changes in bacterial cell state and extracellular conditions on killing efficacy. We will use a combination of single cell fluorescence microscopy, synthetic phage lysis systems and mathematical modelling to build a quantitative understanding of lysis efficacy. By combining experimental and theoretical approaches, this project will discover general rules for improving the design and optimization of phage therapy.

The postdoc will be based in the group of Claudia Igler, within Microbial Evolution Research Manchester (MERMan), the largest and most diverse research cluster in microbial ecology and evolution in the UK.

We seek a postdoctoral research associate working on phage-bacteria interactions and with a background in (biological) physics, bioimaging, computational biology and/or experimental microbiology. This position provides an excellent opportunity for a motivated researcher to develop their interdisciplinary research skills and build an international collaborative network.
