Apprentice Grounds Person

The Grounds Person is responsible for the maintenance, renovation and preparation of one or more sports turf surfaces, in accordance with the needs of the particular sport. It is their job to maintain a playing surface to the performance quality standards appropriate to the sport being played.

As an apprentice, you will work alongside experienced grounds staff, building up knowledge, skills and responsibility, whilst gaining a professional qualification

The Sport Turf Operative Standard comprises of 10 core topic areas which will cover both knowledge and skills:

- Environmental and health and safety legislation and impact
- Policy compliance
- Application and use of tools, materials and machinery
- Identification and understanding of grasses, soil types, weeds, pests and diseases
- Impact of weather, ground conditions and usage
- Surface performance quality standards
- Monitoring, recording and reporting
- Plant science
- Marking out areas in line with Governing Body regulations
- Drainage and irrigation

**Desired Qualifications**
- GCSE’s, or equivalents in maths and English are desired but not essential
- Applicant must not already hold a Level 2 or higher in Horticulture.

**Future Progression**
- Possibility of a employment if a suitable role is available.

**Training Provided**
- Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment.
- The applicant will be working towards and gain a Level 2 Sports Turf Operative Apprenticeship.
- The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.
- The apprentice will work towards an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship.
- You will also need to achieve Level 3 award in Emergency First Aid at Work and Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance or Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides before undertaking the End Point Assessment.
