The post holder will assist the Head of Health and Safety and Strategic Manual Handling Adviser in the development and implementation of a management system to reduce the risk of manual handling and ergonomic injuries to staff. Promote Health board-wide safer handling practices for all staff Required to act independently, accountable for actions & advice given, which will be specialist in nature and informed by leading expert opinion. Provide basic or complex advice on interpretation of legislation and give detailed and complex explanation of how it applies to the broad range of service provision Motivate and persuade WBIs, managers, nurses and others to improve and develop practice, including approved techniques and equipment for patients. This is often contentious, and differs from usual custom and practice Work within the guidelines of the policies and procedures of the Health Board with regard to Manual Handling and Risk assessments Develop and deliver training courses to all staff groups in manual handling practice including patient handling and inanimate load handling.

Develop, motivate and support the role of Manual Handling coaches, their managers, nurses and others to improve and develop practice, including approved techniques and equipment for patients Plan and organize a schedule of support visits to wards and departments to review their standards of manual handling g practice and complete any necessary reports etc. Advise and give direction to a wide variety of specialist assessments including individual patient manual handling procedures such as bariatric, paediatric and other patients or situation with particular handling needs Provide highly complex handling advice and practical support to initiate a bespoke plan of care where wards and departments have failed to meet the complex need of the patient. e.g. bariatric care, amputees, patients in moulded wheelchairs etc Give unique specialist advice to specialists on individual patients or groups.

Via Risk Assessment make recommendations and or judgement on a broad range of specialties. Examples of complex handling situations include CT Scan Transfers, Rehabilitation Department and Rehabilitation Engineering, Home Assessments and Bariatric Patients. On occasions the advice given may require must be supported by a suitable and sufficient risk assessment considering health and safety and clinical care requirements Demonstrate a flexible problem solving approach in clinical and classroom situations Direct involvement in hands on care as required: teach/demonstrate techniques to ward and departmental staff. Work within the guidelines of the policies and procedures of the Health Board with regard to Manual Handling and Risk assessments.

Responsible for correct care and use complex and expensive training environments including equipment resources, and multi-media equipment. Analyse the outcomes of training programmes and implement/make recommendations to managers to ensure the Health Board achieves its statutory objectives and fulfils its governance commitments Organize and maintain accurate records of training Monitor effectiveness of the policy and develop initiatives to reach policy objectives so that they maintain their relevance within the current needs of the service, and then suggest revisions/options for consideration. Examples of this include systems of support for WBIs, monitoring skills, legal requirements, access to equipment, methods of communication etc. Generate reports and data for managers to review compliance with targets and policies.

Undertake audit, research and promote evidence based practice. Attend as required and actively contribute to relevant Health Board meetings, including the production of regular papers, reports and performance dashboards. Review own working practices in order to develop more effective ways of working. Research and disseminate best practice in manual handling practice and risks across the Health Board.

Undertake research in practice within the specialty, this will be the equivalent of one or two days per month. Aim to publish results in relevant literature. Topics to research may include: levels of staff injuries, compliance to LOLER, patient passivity when wearing pyjamas, effectiveness of WBIs etc. Deputise for Strategic Manual Handling Adviser when necessary.
